I’ve also heard that a bottled coke will last forever
I don’t know about bottled Coke (may be true 🤷)… but the CANNED variety does go bad. We tried to use a 12-pack that had been sitting around since last Christmas. All I can say is BLECH. It tasted really bad.

We ended up chukking the whole thing.

Yeah I remember when I was younger my brother opened a can of coke and took a few sips and left it ontop of this tall cabinet. A few weeks went by and my mom made me clean the room. When I dumped out the can it had a jelly/jello like consistency w/ mold. I nearly threw up and couldn’t drink pop for a few years.:crying:

I am NOT a morning person - let’s just make that clear right now.

So when I woke up a couple months ago and made some toast with my eyes half opened, it wasn’t until the second piece that I realized I was eating totally moldy bread.:p:eek:😛

I thought it didn’t taste quite right, but was too tired to process the data in my brain.

The second piece went in the trash.

It was even worse when I did the same thing with a bowl of cereal about six months ago - did you know, skimmed milk tastes funny when it’s just starting to go off? I thought it was just the brand. Then I realized at lunch when I went to pour a glass that it was not fit for consumption.

I gross myself out sometimes. But this only happens in the morning when I’m only semi-conscious. :o

Well, you see, had it been a can of Diet Coke, it wouldn’t have been a problem!

Haha Anything Diet back then tasted gross to me, plus I had a slight addiction to sugar. I used to eat alot of candy:rolleyes:

Hotdogs are so over processed and have so many preservatives I doubt any living thing could survive on it.
It’s like a twinkie, they stay good forever
Yeah or American Cheese. It can never go bad!

You actually might have been okay there – bacteria does not grow in food kept in the freezer. The food in the refrigerator is what you have to worry about. The expiration dates are for food that isn’t frozen.
This just reminded me of something that happened about a month ago in my house. My wife and son were out so I was preparing something to eat for my daughter and I. She asked for a hot dog and I found one in the back of the freezer. While cleaning up afterward my daughter found an expiration date of 08/2004  on the empty dog pack. I kid you not. Seems it got lost in the back of our outdoor freezer then somehow moved to the kitchen freezer. I’m happy to say my daughter is still with us, though I don’t think she will ever let me live it down… 😛

You could very well be okay BUT…

I ate a rotten can of corn about two months ago. I didn’t notice that it tasted like death until I had started to eat it.

Anyway, I freaked out and started looking into food poisoning stuff.

Turns out that depending on the type of bacteria present, symptoms of food poisoning may delay a few days. I read that symptoms tend to manifest within 4-36 hours, but it can be as long as 72 hours…and if I recall correctly sometimes up to a week.

I say this not to freak you out but just to let you know that you shouldn’t consider yourself off the hook yet.

If you have poison control hotline or something in your area, you might want to call it and see what they have to say. That’s what I did…and they told me I might get sick but I might not. I didn’t get sick, but then again I really only had a small mouthful. It can depend on how much you consume.
I was going to make the same point about the fact that the poisoning might not show up for a few days - so keep on guard and us posted 🙂

You know, there is a funny story that goes along with my canned corn story.

After I realized that the corn was bad but before we called poison control, my boyfriend’s mom suggested that we induce vomiting. I have never made myself throw up before and I was terrified to do the whole stick your finger down your throat thing.

Anyway, my bf had a bottle of whiskey knocking around. He brought it to me and said “Have you ever had whiskey before?” I told him no. He says, “Good. Drink this straight out of the bottle. It is sure to make you puke without you even trying.”

HAHA. Let’s just say that it didn’t work. I don’t know why…but even though I just CHUGGED 'er down…it didn’t make me puke…even after I finally got the courage to egg it on by doing the stick your finger down your throat thing.

After about 20 mins my bf starts to get worried and says, “You had better throw up soon or you are just going to end up really REALLY drunk.”

I ended up really, really drunk.

Oh, and when we spoke with the poison control lady later, she said inducing vomiting wouldn’t have done anything anyway. So we wasted a shwackload of whiskey.

Hehe. Oh well. lol.

Yeah or American Cheese. It can never go bad!
Speaking of American Cheese, I was in a cheese eating contest at work some years ago, and guess what kind of cheese my coworkers got for me? If you guessed American, you’re right. They definitely do not go down easy, after the 10th slice or so. Surprisingly, both of those coworkers still became my roommates.

Watching any type of eating contest makes me feel sick. How could a person force so much food into their body? Even that show Man vs. Food on the travel channel is so gross! He eats 20lb burgers, 2 feet long pizzas etc

I think my stomach would explode before finishing 10 bites of anything

I thought this was an interesting article on sell-by or use-by dates.

I tend to not look at dates as much as use my God given senses to decide.

Touch-does it feel slimy or OTOH really dry?

Smell- if it smells bad, it probably is.

Sight- is the color off, are there bubble in any liquid?

Hearing- did you hear a pop when the jar was opened?

Taste- if it passes all the other tests, does it taste off? If so may be bad.

We just can’t afford to throw away food that is perfectly good just because of some arbitrary date. And we save lots of cash at the grocery buying the markdown foods that are close to the expiration dates.
