who is not hostile to the catholic faith. I’d like to send her a book but have no idea which one. My first thought was St. Therese’s book “Story of a Soul”. I’d like to hear other ideas.

Thank you in advance.

excellent choice ! reading this converted a atheist jew Edith Stein .whom we now know as St.Teresa Benedicta of the Cross O.C.D.

How about C. S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity?

He was an anglican, but many Catholics consider him an honorary Catholic because his beliefs did not contradict what the Catholic Church teaches. Also, many converts to Catholicism credit C S. Lewis for their conversion.

Not that you are trying to convert her, but it IS a good book and rather an easy read. 👍

When your friend is in the hospital likely a bad time to try to convert him/her to Catholicism. Let it go and provide a Christian book that we all can celebrate the love of the Trinity. Secondary beliefs about purgatory, praying to Mary etc are best for another day.

Amen

OP did not say whether she was going for conversion. Nor did she say that she wanted to give her a book about purgatory, Mary, etc.

Did I miss something?:confused::confused:

She might like the rosary ring which has a small cross on it.
Many like that to wear when in the hospital. It comforts them.

If you do get it, have it blessed.

Then if she likes it, she may be interested in the rosary itself.
And it is nothing else but the events in the New Testiment.
Saying the rosary can also give peace.
There are small phamlets explaining how to use the rosary.

You might also get her something on Fatima or Lourdes.

Just a thought.

Kolbe: Saint of the Immaculata

Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican

Saint Damien of Molokai: Apostle of the Exiled

The Grunt Padre: Father Vincent Robert Capodanno

Mother Teresa by Navin Chawla

You might look for some books written by Ronald Knox, whom I recently discovered. I am reading a book about him and in it are mentioned several books he wrote.

In Garments All Red; a book about St. Maria Goretti

If you could find a book about Perpetua and Felicity it would have the distinction of being the earliest written record of a Christian woman (circa 200 A.D.). St. Perpetua kept a diary during her captivity. It is a remarkable account.

The Confession of Saint Patrick is also an interesting read. I attend St. Patrick’s church and when teaching teenagers I always tell them that as young teenager Patrick was kidnapped and taken to Ireland. This always gets their attention.

Well those are my thoughts.

God bless

Thank you everybody for your reponses! I really appreciate it. God bless you all.

As-an Anglican who spent a couple of weeks or so in hospital I would say not to worry too much about what to take in…I didn’t feel much like reading a lot of time. I did make lots of use of my Holding Cross and a copy of compline. I also read a book in which Maggie Dawn wrote quite amusingly about some pilgrimages she had been on…it was light reading, not particularly intellectual quite short and with quite large print…perfect for when tired after an op and still affected by anesthetic. I was given some faith encouraging books but to be quite honest I wasn’t interested…just too much at that time. It is best to chose your own reading material, something you are in the mood for , when you are under the weather.IMO
