Hello,
I have a question which I am very troubled by. During this year’s Easter service I have been Confirmed into the Catholic Church. I have been baptized at a very young age in a Russian Orthodox Church and we receive the sacrament of Chrismation as well as our first Communion all at the same time. I have just been made aware of the fact (and Canon Laws attached to it) that I wasn’t supposed to receive the Confirmation the second time around, that it is a great sacrilege, and that the priest who presided over the ceremony should have known that. Now that I think about it, I have in the past read that if Chrismation took place and if wishing to convert to Catholicism, Confirmation is not repeated, but it didn’t even click up until now, I guess that I just assumed that there is room for leniency in this matter and that if I was allowed to go through with it, it must be OK. From what I understand now I was only supposed to recite the Creed to be welcomed into the Catholic Church, albeit I would still retain the roots of my Orthodox faith within my religion orientation – Russian Orthodox. Where does this leave me, what should I do now? I plan to talk to my parish priest to see what he says and thinks. I also want to add that he is most wonderful and very knowledgeable person, whom I have great respect for; and I truly believe that it was an honest mistake on his part, but I am still left with an uneasy feeling and questions unanswered.
