As far as the scourging being over the top, consider that this was punishment Christ took to himself for all sins for all time. I believe it was worse in the reality.
My favorite scene is where Mary and Satan are walking on opposite sides of the street – eyes locked – and Satan blinks. It disappears, gone, nowhere.
Prophetic.
