Are there any good MODERN books that detail and really deeply discuss the three conditions needed to commit a mortal sin? All I can find is the “classics” that use old english, they are not a very easy read. (Sinners guide, etc.)

They may not have enough of what you are looking for but:

An Introduction to Moral Theology, second ed., by WIlliam E. May has a chapter on Sin with a 10 page section on mortal/venial sins.

The Way of the Lord Jesus: Christian Moral Principles vol. 1 by Germain Grisez has a very good section on mortal sin (Ch. 15 Q. C).

Good luck,

David

Hey, dizzy dave: can I ask you why such a book would be necessary? The three conditions are simple, and in trying to live a holy life, we don’t need to focus extensively on categorizing our sins as mortal or venial. This whole practice was perfected to the fine science of casuistry in the 17th century, and it is no wonder that JPII said the greatest crisis in the Church is in the area of moral theology as a result.

We are called to turn from sin with our whole heart and to love God with all our strength and might. The point is not to figure out how much I can get away with before a sin becomes mortal. The point is to learn to respond more and more faithfully and eagerly to Christ’s redeeming love. A book on how to do that I might recommend…but not a book on sin, even just for scholarly interest.

I would disagree. I often have great dificulty determining if a sin is mortal or venial.
