I Need a Book Recommendation

I have my brother’s name for Christmas and I would like to get him a book. He is a non-practicing Lutheran married to a non-practicing Catholic.

I think he has been searching a little over the past couple years. I would like to get him a book that helps him think and search a little deeper. I have thought of “Mere Christianity”, but I am concerned that it may be a little too heavy for him to read. I don’t think he reads much. But maybe something on that order.

Of course, I’d also like to get him a book based on a Catholic perspective.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I have heard Mere Christianity is a great book. And though C.S. Lewis was an Anglican, he pretty much wrote from a Catholic perspective. I heard or read somewhere that the only reason he wasn’t Catholic was that he had some issue with the Catholic Church, but that he believed it was the true church.

Home Sweet Rome by Scott & Kimberly Hahn. It brought me back to my Catholic Faith and it also explained all the things that my own Baptist Brother kept saying to me. It made me start at the bottom and climb higher. I recommend it to everyone!

Good call. If he doesn’t like to read, get him the audiotape version – especially if he spends time in the car and has a tape deck there.

You can’t beat C.S. Lewis. He changed my life. If I could understand the book, anyone can!

I have heard that “Handbook of Christian Apologetics” by Peter Kreeft and Ronald K Tacelli is good, although I haven’t read it.

It depends on what he’s like. I enjoyed the “Snakebite Letters” when I was first coming back to the Church. It’s a short, informative, and fun read. A History of Christendom is a great read, too, if a “little” more involved. I think the other books recommended are good as well, although I have a difficult time reading CS Lewis’ stuff and haven’t made it through his books.
