Hi, OK here’s the situation:

I converted to the Catholic Faith in 2001. In 2007 I met quite a few new friends in our large parish of over 3000 families after attending a CRHP retreat. I sing in the main choir, and have been very active in our Twinning Community and other ministries. Shortly after CRHP I had quite a few friends over to a bon fire at my house. One family brought their 15 year old son to play guitar and he asked to cut my grass for a summer job. I gave him Bible verses to memorize while working and he memorized them with zeal and we talked about a lot of the life issues he was dealing with in school. He is very talented and I helped him with his music, we were very lucky and blessed in this endeavor. He performed the National Anthem at a sold out major league ball park when he was 16 as a result of my help, and has continued to play every year since then. That grew into many National Anthem performances - over 25 of them at local arenas for college basketball, minor league hockey, and even a Monster Jam. We’ve made many big friends in the music industry and even professionally recorded a CD of his original music when a local studio installed a new audio room and wanted a guinea pig. He’s been featured as a re-occuring artist on NPR, major radio shows, and local TV even up until this present date.

OK so skipping ahead to the present day and the situation, about two years into this I began dealing with a jealous uncle and always backed off when he wanted to do what I was doing, however, the kid I’ve been helping never wanted me to quit and so I’ve been involved to this date. Now, this 16 year old Bible verse memorizer with a zeal for the faith is a 20 year old attending one of the biggest party school colleges in the US. His uncle (who btw is a short man with a big Napolean Complex) is working very very hard to get me out of the picture and it has been quite stressful for all of us. However, the young man who I’ve helped has changed a lot and began lying to me about his music and shows about a year ago. I’ve discovered that he’s dropping F-bombs in shows and lives in a Frat House where drug use and partying is the way of life, although he denies the drug use but acknowledges it in other band members and roommates in his house.

Well…here’s the situation, I’ve registered his band website when I was helping them get going - him and his band have me listed as manager and I’ve set some huge shows for them. We’re currently talking with the old manager of a major pop band from the 90’s and looking to set some big shows for the band. His original music has been great, this guy is truly gifted. Our contacts are amazing. I, however, have been slowly left out of recent shows and events after setting them and have found out and confirmed last week that his uncle advised him to slowly gather information from me and then remove me as the manager. This has come to such a head that I am OK with being removed as manager due to the recent changes in the band’s shows and environment. However, I own this website I setup for them, they want me to give them the website. It cost a lot of money to register it and develop it and it’s a big part of their successes. I talked with the uncle and he confirmed he advised them to slowly remove me…he is not a man of faith…his motives are to remove me because he wants to do what I’ve been doing and because he doesn’t like the morals I’ve help instill in their music. So - my choices are to (1) try and stick it out and not give the website to them. (2) Give them the website and just let it all go, or (3) sell them the website for my costs and let it all go…

I don’t know what is the right thing to do in this situation!!! But I’m telling you I did not invest all of this time and money and effort to see their music and shows go to the wrong side or to be slowly used for contacts and information until I wasn’t needed anymore.

IF you’re still with me on reading this…what would you do? Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks ><>

PS: If you send me a private message I’ll send you the links to the website and band and you can see all we’ve done through the years. I didn’t want to post any personal information here because I’m not sure how it may turn up on google or other search engines.

I guess it all comes down to the original reason you started helping him. If you invested the time and money in the website out of the goodness of your heart because you wanted him to do well and get him started then I would probably just let the website go back to him and let him go on his way. It’s unfortunate that things needed to end this way but maybe some day he will realize what you did for him and do the right thing.

I also have a friend who is finding success as a Christian music singer. I offered to setup a website for him but a record label did this for him once he signed with them. If I would have setup the original website I would have done that and any of the web development for it as a friend and I wouldn’t expect him to pay it back regardless of how successful he was…even if we had a falling out.

I guess you need to ask yourself what are you going to be able to do with the website if you cut off relations with him?

I would pray on it and go with what your heart tells you. I have a feeling you already know what the right decision is for your situation and you should follow your instincts.

Either way though I wouldn’t continue to pursue a relationship with him if he is not returning the favor to you. He’s an adult now…if he wants to seek the bad advice from an uncle that probably doesn’t have pure intentions in mind he will need to learn from his own mistakes. I would just try to keep your relationship at a point where it could be repaired once he has a little time to learn from his mistakes.

I’d sale them the website, but make sure the price is fair to you. You’ve put in a lot of time and energy, and the price needs to reflect that. If they wont meet your price, shut the website down or see if you can sale it, even if it’s just the domain name, to another business.

First off, do you owe him anything, in terms of money or time? Reading your post, I can’t see any reason that you should. It seems as if it has, so far, been a venture in which you have both contributed and neither “owes” the other, or, if anything, he owes you at least some gratitude.

So, assuming that you don’t owe him anything, then I would not consider just giving him the site, because you have invested your own time and money into it. He has had the advantage using the site up until now, but you do not owe it to him to continue using it.

I would treat the site as if it were equipment you had loaned him (eg. amplifiers). So far he has used that equipment “gratis” because you were in a joint venture. The joint venture has ended and he is not entitled to keep it. You can either take it back, or sell it to him - for costs, or whatever amount you can get. The sale price is the value to him, not to you.

Is the site is of any commercial value to yourself, eg. do you expect that you might get some future kudos from saying “I built … web site?”. In that case, you might consider giving it to him so that he will continue to promote your site.

Thanks for the advice. He doesn’t owe me anything nor I him. I think the real issue for me is that after he made choices to go in the wrong direction with his music, he lied to me for a year and followed his unce’s advice to slowly remove me so he wouldn’t lose any contacts or anything like the website and custom emails. Now, a year ago, had he said he wanted to go on his own because he is in a raging college mode then I would have given him everything and wished him the best. However, it’s the deceit in his ways and the ways of his 50 something year old uncle that make me think that the best thing to do is not to give them this website.

The website is of no value to me, it would just be shutdown. The domain name would be of no use to anyone else other than this band. I guess the issue I’m strugling with is whether or not this is an act of vegeance or the right and just thing to do.

I’m not here to teach anyone lessons, but at the same time what lesson does he learn? That if you want something badly then you should lie to and slowly manipulate people in order to get it??? I already talked with his uncle and told him that at the very least this is bad business ethics and it is not the way to go about things.

Am I resonding wrong for wrong to just take down this site? Should I turn the other cheek and give it to them for free and tell them God loves them and forgives them? This is what I’m trying to decide, I’d like to have it resolved this weekend.

Thanks for reading and for your thoughts and prayers.

It’s not over til it’s over. I would sell it to him for a reasonable price, and maintain friendly relations so he has good memories of how a Christian can be courteous and yet not be a doormat.

👍

In a nutshell!

I second this. I would not give him the domain name or the website for nothing. It is worth something and you should be paid for your work, at least.

The rest is a shame, but you never know what will happen, so good not to burn bridges.

I think u should just let it go, i dont think they would even want to pay for the site. Just let it go and thank them, love them and forgive. It cant be easy.

I would sell the website at a fair price and let it go. This young man is old enough now to make his own decisions, however foolish. Hopefully, he will see in a few years that he has made the wrong choice and return to the right path.
