I need help chosing an appropriate confirmation gift for a boy

The boy is my husbands’ cousin, and we don’t see him often. I don’t want to just write a check and I am going to get him a book about Pope John Paul II, but that is only $5. What elese would really show that we care about him and his spiritual journey?.

It was traditional in my day (confirmed in 1963) to give boys an adult (i.e. full size) rosary with red beads and the Sacred Heart as the “centerpiece”(?). Girls got blue with the BVM as “centerpiece”. We also got our big (i.e. adult St. Joseph) missals but that was a long time ago. I still have both so I guess the best thing would be to get him something of a religious nature that he will remember in the future.
 
A copy of “Letters to a Young Catholic” by George Weigel (sp?) - I cannot reccomend that book enough for Catholics of all ages!
 
Last year my husband was the sponser for a lad from our parish. We gave him a t-shirt that said “confirmed” and had the seven gifts of the Holy spirit on it. It was pretty cool looking, and no one else gave him one. I guess he wore it to school, and several of his chums wanted to know where he got it. I understand the DRE asked about it too, as a possible “gift” for all the candidates from this year’s class.
 
My cousin Joey just made his confirmation last week and my father was his sponsor. He gave him at statue of Joseph, two prayer cards to Joseph and a medal. He also wrote him a letter about his faith and how Joseph plays a key role. I do not know that he would read a book, but that is more his personality. He really liked the gift my dad gave him.

Maybe you could find out which name he is taking and do something similar. In my cousin’s case he took his given name of Joseph.

Similarly, I was his sisters confirmation sponsor and she took the name Mary
Magdalene. I gave her a prayer card on Mary

Magdalene and a beautiful crucifix. In her thank you letter she gave me a cross for my car with a prayer that she had blessed by her priest. They have such a wonderfully spiritual family.

I think a spiritually enriching gift is much better than money anyday! The book about the Pope sounds live a great start.
 
having been asked this question dozens of times (maybe hundreds) while managing christian bookstores, i can tell you that a VERY popular gift for such an occasion is a Bible with the person’s name engraved on the cover, along with the date.
 
I baught my cousin a visor clip that said “don’t drive faster than your guardian angel can drive” and had a priest bless it for a teen driver here confirmation is in grade 10, so my cousin was 16…I don’t know if your confirmante is in grade 8 or 10 but my cousin still has the clip and its been more than three years
 
My preference for a gift is a copy of the Ignatius Bible and a custom rosary with the person’s patron saint as the centerpiece.
 
I would look for a small statue of or a book about his patron saint. Or perhaps a medal. 🙂
 
He chose the name John, but I don’t know who his patron saint is.

the greatest gift you could ever give this child and his parents will benefit too!

maybe 10 days… but you can pay for the quicker delivery… the entire set is about 300, but i promise you as i said earlier… worth every penny… just start small, get one tape… about 20 bucks… they will hunger for more…

Ask him which john, there are about 30
 
A realistic looking crucifix. They are hard to find, but worth it. I got one for my daughter for her 1st Communion, b/c I know that is one thing that gets taken with you and used your entire life (I’ve always had one on my bedroom wall, and the one I have now was my Grandparents)
