Hello. I have to ask something about catholic life… What does Catholic teaching say about video games such as Grand Theft Auto? Is it forbidden to play by Catholic law? 🤷

Catholic law has very little to say about Grand Theft Auto (the game).

Your state or local laws, however, most likely do legislate against committing Grand Theft Auto.

Scriptures says to focus on everything that is good Holy & pure. Grand theft Auto, I’m guessing is a game where you pretend/compete stealing cars? that would be practicing the sin of the 7th commandment. While I’m sure the game is fun, virtual practicing of sin is not the best past time. Perhaps you could investigate Christian alternative games…

You’d be surprised how many things the Church does not have a law about. Video games are one of those things. As long as there isn’t anything in the game that inspires your lust, or causes you to have violent feelings toward real people, you can play it.

But of course you probably want to limit (not eliminate) your time on video games and do something more useful instead. 🙂

Games are not evil or sinful by themselves. However we make them that way. It is really about perspective. Take for example my wife recently received her magazine in the mail that had a model in a swimsuit with topics about losing weight and looking sexy. She is an adult and faithful, I have trust in her that she can read this magazine and not be affected by the model in front. However, what happens when my 3 year old sees her reading that same magazine? Her understanding is different that my wife’s. I have asked my wife to hid those magazines from our daughters for now.

If GTA is causing you to sin or think sinful thoughts, than back away and play it when you are ready, if ever. Do you feel it is funny to kill a hooker for her money? Steal cars and become a crime lord? Perhaps you just like the game for the way it is played and you do not care about the storyline (probably not).

The same can be said for music as well. Music is just singing with instruments, but when you hear the words, what are you really thinking. Are you thinking lustful thoughts when you hear Mariah Carey’s “Touch my Body,” Do you feel violent when you are listening to Eminem songs about hating other people? Only you can answer that.
