I need someone who is good with old movies that could help me find out the title of one. I saw this movie in the late 80’s.
This is what I remember of it.

There is a man who has 5 kids. His wife dies and he tries to raise the boys on his own but child protective services takes them away. He vows that he will do anything in his power to get to get them back no matter how long it takes. It takes the man a good many years but he finds a lady and remarries and they go find them one at a time. The oldest boy causes alot of problems and is sent to an institutional and is sterilized. They find him last and he walks with a limp and uses a cane. But they all get reunited at the end.

The man may be a military man? I’m not sure. I think he could have been a trade worker in a workplace. Please help me get a title to this movie! It is an old black and white movie. In between the 1930’s and 1950’s. Any help would be deeply appreciated. I don’t remember anyone who starred in it either.

After The Promise is a 1987 movie

Loved this movie! I remember it well. It is not in black and white though.

This is the movie I thought of as I was reading the OP. The description of the story brought back memories of scenes, but I didn’t know the name. Mark Harmon played the father. I could almost picture him when reading the OP. Even though it is not a movie from the 30’s - 50’s, the story takes place during the depression.

It is available on You Tube and it looks like it may be the full film.

Did one of the boys have a limp and was sterilized? This is something I remember in the movie so vividly.

Yes, the oldest boy had a limp. I don’t remember about the sterilization. I’m betting this is the movie you are thinking of.

Thank you all so much. That is the title of the movie. Y’all are awesome!!! Now to see if I can find it to buy it. Maybe YouTube will have the movie online and I can watch it there. God bless you all! !!!

I went back to You Tube after posting last night and saw that the entire film is posted, however, it is in segments. No problem, really. They are numbered, so you know what order to watch them in. I also saw in my search that the movie is sold on Amazon, but I did not check to see if it is in stock or the price. If you subscribe to Netflicks, you could check there as well.

A couple of months ago my sister was showing me how Blue Ray can access You Tube so that you can play the videos on TV. Don’t know if that will help.

After all this talk about it, I watched it on you tube last night. Even though I knew how it ended, I still cried. 🙂
