I have been having trouble discerning mortal sin from venial sin for a while now. I do know the three things that must be present if one were to commit mortal sin. However, I think my mind tends to blow things out of proportion, but I can’t help but feel that I am in a state of sin over something that seems very small, if anything at all. It mostly happens when I will be going to mass soon and I am worried about receiving a Eucharist in a state of sin, thus committing a sacriledge.
A priest has told me that I have a sensitive conscience and also warned me to not become scrupulous. I fear that I am starting to lean towards being scrupulous. I will give you an example of how quickly I can fall into, what my mind considers, a state of sin. I went to confession, went to mass right after and about an hr and a half later, I do something that I think deems me unworthy to receive the Eucharist. I was planning on going to mass in the morning with my family.
I was reading what is basically a Catholic Answer book, except I think it was called Radio Replies, it was a catholic book with answers to questions about the Catholic faith. I remember that it was a response to a question about the Prohibition, and I saw something that might either be impure, or cause me to have impure thoughts. My mind was thinking that it was these things, even though a normal person would see it as harmless and nothing else. I remember that I looked back at the question even though something was telling me to " steer clear." After that, I never looked back, but still felt like I did something that makes me unworthy. The more I think about it, the more innocent it seems, but my gut tells me that I shouldn’t take the chance. I want to disobey what my gut tells me because of reasons previously mentioned. Then I think that taking the risk is like committing the act…very confused as to what I should do.
