I need some help

The guy teaching my History of Christianity class told everyone that there wasn’t a pope in the early Church, and minimized the role of the bishops. I knew it was wrong, but I couldn’t challenge him because I have no evidence to support it. Does anyone know of any documents from the time of the Apostles, or shortly after, that support the papacy and the bishops?
