I need to find a good Church in Montana

I have just moved to Missoula, Montana to help take care of my niece after my sister was killed in a car accident. Today was my first Sunday here and I went to Mass at the local University Parish because they are the ones who run the RCIA program here and I am just joining the Catholic Church. It was bad. Even as a new catechumen I could tell that this was an uber-liberal church. For starters I was the only one who kneeled, everybody held hands for the Our Father, and the priest of course used the short form of the Confiteor (wouldn’t want to spend too much time on sin when we’re all trying to feel good). Today’s reading was Luke 13: 22-30 so you’d think he might talk about the “narrow gate” or the “wailing and grinding of teeth”, but no he ignored it completely and talked entirely about the new missal translation. I get the feeling Hell is not a popular subject in this Church. Then they used what looked like a big cookie for the Body of Christ. I, of course, did not receive communion as I have not even been baptized yet, but I could see pretty clearly that it was not the hard thin wafer I saw in the churches I went to in New York. I’m going to another Church for an evening Mass so hopefully that will be better, but I’m a little scared now. As I said I’m new to the faith and in need of guidance and I don’t want to be led down the wrong path. I’m not strictly a traditionalist, although I do love the Latin Mass and went to it often at Holy Innocents in New York, but I would like to at least have a Novus Ordo that was done properly and a Priest who cares more about how we fare at our Judgment than whether our knees are comfortable. Today’s Gospel makes it clear to me that we can’t pick and choose the parts of our faith that we find convenient, or else we will be told to depart. So, now that my rant is over I would like to ask if anyone knows of a Church in or around Missoula that they would recommend. I am more than willing to drive out of my way if I have to. Please pray for me and for a better experience at the next Church.

I can’t help you on churches in Montana, but I wanted to reassure you that the Eucharistic bread need not be hard, thin, or a wafer. The requirement to be valid (i.e., the sacrament can actually take place) is, basically, merely that it be wheat bread. The (more stringent) requirement to be licit (i.e., what you’re supposed to do) in the Latin Rite is that it be bread made of absolutely nothing but wheat flour and water. It may surprise you to learn that disarmingly “bready” bread can be made from just flour and water. There’s no reason at all to assume that just because the host you saw wasn’t flat and wafery that there was anything wrong with it.

I am so sorry to hear about your sister. I am sure that this has been a rough time for all of your family. I think that it is wonderful that you are helping with your niece. May you both find comfort.

A good church can help with that of course. I can relate in trying to find a good mass when one is new to the area. I would suggest, now don’t laugh! using YELP.com.

This has been very helpful for me and mine in the past. Usually, you can tell by the drift of the reviews how liberal or not the church may be. Look for key phrases such as
“The leturgical dancers were so lively!” or “I was handed a ‘glory hoop’ as I walked in the door; we all waved it in time to the singing of the ‘Our Father’!” to help guide you.

Thank you everyone. I went to St Francis Xavier for the evening Mass and it was definitely better. They used incense and even had some Latin prayers. I will also make sure to go to St John the Baptist next week. I checked and it’s only about 25 minutes from here.
It’s really good to know that the Eucharistic bread is not a problem. It was just different than what I’ve seen and so I was concerned. As long as the Sacrament is valid I suppose most other things are a matter of taste. I guess it could have been worse since there were no liturgical dances or “glory hoops,” whatever those are (scary).
I’ll let you all know how next Sunday goes.

Do you think our Lord, Jesus Christ used little wafers during the Last Supper? Didn’t he touch all kinds of people, from good to bad, lepers, prostitutes, etc. I don’t think he would be offended by His people reaching out to join one another in prayer.

Do you think Jesus used incense to purify? I suspect not.

Did you come into CTK as judge? I don’t think our Brother Jesus would be to pleased with you.

Sounds like you want a church flled with man-made rules and regulations that have nothing to do with Eucharist and The Body of Christ - the people.

Hope Frenchtown fullfills you vision of an ancient church.

If the listings for Montana Latin Masses are up to date, then you have one choice and that is Frenchtown. All the others are CMRI or SSPV (I think there are some SSPX which may come into communion with Rome soon) The CMRI & SSPV are NOT in communion with Rome.
