Is it sinful that I would be really upset if what I am passionate about was taken away as long as my passion is not an idol? I mean, my passion could be what God wants me to do in life and fulfilling my passion could bring me closer to God. Please help!! I am really worried and I don’t want to be worried during Christmas! Thany you guys soooo much!!🙂 Merry Christmas!!🙂

Can’t really be very helpful without more detail. What is this passion? Who is taking it away from you, and how? And how old are you?

My passion is architecture, so I love beautiful buildings. I am a teenager. And, I meant if God took it away.

How would God take away architecture? I am so confused here…

I have several passions in life. I seperate them into earthly, spiritual, and relationships. Long distance motorcycle riding, running, football, are my earthly passions, Faith speaks for itself and people such as my wife, son, extended family and friends are my relationship passions.

You must be careful not to let the earthly passions interfere with the other 2.

Many years ago my running began to crowd the relationship and the spritual passions. For 5 years I trained for and raced marathons. It was demanding and time consuming. When I wasn’t actually training I was preparing. Everything revolved around my running. When we ate, parties, etc.

I began skipping Mass on Sunday because that was the day I ran my long runs with friends.

Things around the house were beginning to slip because I was too tired from training to do anything but nap, eat, and prepare for the next workout.

Worst of all, I began to fell snug about who I was and who everyone might be. I only hung around with like minded individuals and those less athletic became targets.

I trained hard for 6 years without so much as a pulled muscle. But then out of the blue, I was struck down with a groin injury. Took me 6 weeks to recover. I thought I would go crazy. I got well and back on the roads, and soon hurt something else.

My bigggest problem was tendinitis in my lower legs. I’d run 3 weeks, heal up 6. Whenever I reached a certain threshold it appeared. Nothing I did seemed to help. I went to numerous doctors but with no success. I was mad with God for doing this to me, I was not ready to see what he was trying to tell me, too stubborn.

It had been over a year since I had last been pain free. Then I just gave up, I was mad with the world. I became the anti thesis of myself. In 15 months I gained 25 lbs. My body was just not use to the inactivity, and had no way to cope.

I was taken down a notch. I lost contact with my running friends, and soon found myself hanging around the people I use to make fun of. Totally beat down, I went 3 years without running a step. Finally, I came before God. "Lord I know why you took running from me now, but if you see fit to give it back, I’ll do better, and give you the glory, because I know I can only run because you allow me to. I was like a stubborn stallion that refused the saddle, but came to realize I was not leaving the corral again till I submitted to it. The way it was with my running. Until I turned it over to God, I wasn’t going anywhere.

Something told me to buy a bicycle so I did. I pedaled it to help get back in shape, and along the way the bike balanced out the muscles in my lower legs. I lost a little weight and then one afternoon I put on my training shoes, sat in my office and said the rosary before going out to ask the Blessed Mother to put this request to run on Her Son’s altar. I went outside on a late summer afternoon, and began my comeback.

I once ran marathons (26 miles) in 3 hours, now it took me 20 minutes to walk and run 2 miles, but I was pain free! I couldn’t believe it. I ran the last quarter mile with tears in my eyes. I was runing again! It felt so good to move in the wind. I had missed it so much. I promised to never take it for granted again.

I lost the the exta weight and was soon back to running as many miles as ever, just not as quickly.

I use to run and train for fast times. Now older and wiser, I run for the fun of it. I still enter races but I work it in with the other things I do in life. If I miss a day I don’t worry about it. If I run a race and don’t do as well as I would have liked I don’t pout. And I take time to help those just starting out, and show patience with all people when it comes to being fit, because it can be taken alot quicker then you can get it.

If I’m running long for the weekend I do it on Saturday mornings so it doesn’t interfere with Church.

I still approach my running the same way.

Now God has no problem with your architecture, but he might if you come to view it the same way I did my running. You do it because he allows you. Your gift is not totally yours, He gave it to you but He’d like for you to give some back. Do it to honor Him, perhaps one day you will design a Church and donate your service to the parish that contracted you. Lots of things you can do to give back and at the same time enjoy your passion with architecture.

I hope this helps.

Wow, Guy… you’re a VERY WISE jokester, aren’t you?

So basically if my passion does not interfere with my Faith, relationships, or other duties, it doesn’t matter if I am attached to it?

Pretty much. I’d only caution about being too attached to anything of this* world.*.

You have the potential to get paid to do something you’re passionate about it. Most people are not passionate about their work. They just do it because it pays the bills.

I was passionate about the fire dept. I loved everything about it. The work, the excitement, the people, and having a sense of duty. I loved it so much I would’ve worked the job for free.

When I saw fire dept swift water team working to save those people in Maryland when that water main burst, I thought I was gonna jump in the tv. Swift water rescue is a technical certification I had, and I only got to use a couple of times.

I would have never retired but God has other plans for me that are just now beginning to manifest. Whatever I’m suppose to do next I’m gonna do it the same way-wide open. But I won’t let it interfer with my Faith, or relationships.

As long as architecture does not detract from your Faith (by keeping you away from church, prayer etc) or take away family time, I think you’ll be fine. But if you let it go too far, don’t be surprised to be taken down a notch , as God tries to show you’re messing up. I know men who made it to the top, but lost everything on the way there, because they ignored the signs God sent them. They were bound and determined not to listen. Don’t let that be you.
