I offer free Latin classes in my parish for absolute beginners only. If I did the same in your parish, would you come?

… obviously this is addressed only to those who have never been taught Latin.

I would. I missed Latin in school, although I’ve studied both Spanish and Italian. Living in Rome, I came up short a number of times with Latin inscriptions, etc. I would like to study the basics. Of course I know I should be doing something productive like this now, with all this pandemic time…

Maybe, but I am more focused on French at the moment.

I would. One of the churches I sometimes attend, offers free Latin classes, but they are offered during normal workday hours.
I wish there were an evening option.

No, because I can still get by with the Latin I learned in high school. But I’d certainly go to a beginners’ course in Greek.

My husband would go if it were at a time that he has available.

I would not be interested. I had Latin in high school and that was enough for me.

Thanks for the offer! I’m sure a lot of people would be interested (including my husband).

Very experienced private language teacher here, including Latin. If you want people to come, don’t give it away for free. No one will value it, or you. Charge at least a token rate, or any students you have will stop coming after a few lessons.

I would. My grandparents grew up in the 50s and 60s, and after hearing all their stories, I’ve become fascinated with the church pre-Vatican II. While I find the Mass and the faith today very beautiful, there’s just something more intrinsically beautiful about something we don’t see much of anymore. French and Spanish never stuck with me when I was in middle and high school, and since Latin played a big part of our faith, I think my interest would be more genuine. Maybe once I graduate from college next year, I can find a resource for beginners.

Actually I operate a system where everyone pays a hundred dollars at the start and gets ten dollars back each time they show up. Like that, aster 10 lessons they got their money back. If there’s money left at the end it goes to the collection.

I teach classical Latin because it’s the most useful starting point but I use church pronunciation.

It’s not just about the Church. It’s also about the heritage, the culture, the beauty. Latin opens doors to the literature and poetry of Europe which you don’t realise until you studied it. It is amazing how even 20th century literature was influenced by the classics. Not to mention some of the finest speeches.

There are peer reviewed studies that support this notion, particularly in the counselling field. If we do not charge patients, most often they do not value the expertise nor do they have as good of clinical outcomes than those who pay even a nominal fee.
