It’s called “Getting the Love You Want” by Harville Hendrix.
When H and I were in counseling last year the counselor had recommended it. We started out reading it but were quickly turned off because the author clearly wasn’t Christian (he talks about a lesbian relationship in the beginning and a couple things like that).
But a couple days ago I was riding the train and flipping through my Kindle for something to read and decided to give it another quick chance. And wow, I have found it very very enlightening. Most of the marriage books and counseling I’ve experienced deal with tactics, tricks, and methods for better communication, which is all good except it never really felt like they were getting to the root of the issues.
This author starts out explaining childhood development and walks you right from infant stage to the adult who is looking for another person to make him/her whole again. It sheds a lot of light on all the unconscious factors that go into choosing a partner and the reason their is often power struggle in the marriage.
Anyway, I rarely recommend non-Catholic psychology authors, but I really like this one. I hope some of you will pick it up.
