What does the Church think about seeing dead people? A trustworthy person lately told me that she’s seen dead people several times, especially her grandfather sitting around in the house he used to live in, but once also a girl from the school she teaches in who died in the tsunami, she didn’t appear herself but a light came that illuminated the wall and she let her know she’s happy. The grandfather on the other hand seems to hang around at his old place like a ghost. This person came to me asking if this was of good or evil and what she should think about it. She’s a believing and praying person so no spiritist or anything like that.
There are people who are like that; their psychic eye is open. My wife has seen a few ghosts or spirits here in our house, and I believe her because one time she said she saw an old man and old woman near our bed, and it so happened that it was my grandfather’s death anniversary (she was not aware it was that day then until I told her).

I will not state this is fact but will say that it makes sense to me. I have been told that the dead, who would otherwise go to Hell, are allowed to come back once to encourage people to pray for them. They are not permitted to ask for prayers nor state the reason for the ‘visit’ directly. This type of visit is alledgedly permitted only once. I have had one experience that **could ** be this type of visit from the dead.
Any experience a person has I believe to be permitted by God and can be used as either a stumbling block or a stepping stone to faith in God.

My own personal theory is that these are Purgatory residing spirits/souls.

i read once, that it is not possible for our souls to be roaming this earth. when we die, our soul goes to heaven, pergutory or hell. we have an angel assigned to us from God and also one is assigned to us from the devil to be with us our entire life. if our angel is with us our entire life, than they know everything about us, right down to how we write. if our good angel knows this about us than so does the bad one assigned to us. the bad one can mimik us to fool someone. this is what could be happening. that is why i believe scainces (sp?), fortune telling, oijia boards, horoscopes, etc are against the first commandment, because these spirits are not of God. just my take on it, if wrong, someone please correct me.
this is not theologically accurate from ym understanding…who says the Devil assigns an angel to us? Second an angel of hell is a demon…

ghosts could possibly someone carrying out their purgatory…

Received this story in an e-mail today. Have seen it before but maybe it can fit here. I doubt if it is true, but who knows? 🙂

An e-mail from a dead person?
This is definitely a lesson to be learned from one typing the wrong email address!

A Minneapolis couple decided to go to Florida to thaw out during a particularly icy winter. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules. So, the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on Thursday, with his wife flying down the following day. The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an email to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her email address, and without realizing his error, sent the email. Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned home from her husband’s funeral. He was a minister who was called home to glory following a heart attack. The widow decided to check her email expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she screamed and fainted. The widow’s son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:

To: My Loving Wife
Subject: I’ve Arrived
Date: October 16, 2004
I know you’re surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send emails to your loved ones. I’ve just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was.

P.S. Sure is hot down here

I was going to suggest that these souls are in Purgatory rather than in Hell, but in rereading your post, I’m thinking that you could have meant that. Because we do pray for those in Purgatory, but not those who are in Hell–of course, we don’t know who is in either Purgatory or Hell.

Living as I do in Gettysburg, “Land of the ghosts”, I often wonder about this issue myself.

I’ve seen the spirits of dead loved ones. After my fiance went to spirit, I saw him several times. He came to tell me he is fine and that he can see me whenever he wants now! 🙂 I’ve also seen my grandmother a couple of times. In both cases, the spirits were bright, but solid. I was able to feel them. They were very warm, and full of love, happiness, and life. I don’t think an evil spirit could pull that off.

I’ve also felt similar warmth before, though without seeing anything. It’s usually been in times of great distress. I’ve always thought it to be my guardian angel letting me know they’re there. 🙂

I hate hearing these “I saw a ghost/dead people stories” where the person who supposedly saw a ghost describes that the ghost was wearing clothing or beat on them or moved this and that etc…

If ghosts were real, then they would not have features since they are souls/spirits and not physical beings. I also seriously doubt that they can have physical contact with any of us (beatings, moving items, etc…) since even for a demon to gain posession of our bodies, we would need to invite them. Even Lucifer and his minions who have the power to corrupt need some sort of invitation.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

It’s interesting that we had a parish priest before who recounted to us his experience. A friend of his, a priest as well whom we knew, died, and so he sad Mass for him. After the Mass, he received a text message that said, “Thanks, Aris”, and the number was from the priest who just died. The funny thing is that that number was already inactive after the priest died.

just barely two weeks ago,my best friend’s FIL,who was a cop, was killed in an ambush. The Chief of Police, where he used to work, would hear noises of somebody opening/closing his (deceased one)locker and footsteps running down the stairs even if, nobody was around, but him.I believe that ghost do “exists”,based on my experience.

Is the woman on any memory-enhancing drugs, such as those used by those who may have some Alzheimer’s symptoms? I ask because the mother of a friend had similar visions, and it was related to the medication her doctor gave her. The hallucinations stopped when the medication level was lowered.

Now Cellular phones and cellular technology is my hobby. Messages can be spoofed by anyone with the know how. Also most Mobile Carriers allow you to send a text message to one of their phones from with-in their website and you can insert any phone number as CALLBACK.

I’m not saying that it did not occur. But you have to look it at it in all perspectives.

It could have been someone playing a prank. Or it could have been our Lord working in his mysterious ways. There are things that can’t be explained and some people just have the need to believe, for closure or for letting go. I don’t knock those people, but some of those things people believe are beyond the this world, the spiritual world and science.

Again this is just my opinion.

I suppose the simplest explanation is that ghosts might be souls working out their purgation in the manner God has chosen for them. I would pray for that soul that they be released into Heaven.

If there are ghosts roaming about, then it is Gods will that they do so. I for one am not fretened by the idea of them. This is simmerla to people seeing ufos and claiming to be abducted. If it is Gods will that these creatures trully exist, then why should i object to them existing, i certainly dont see as a contradiction to my beliefs.

I feel that God doesnt have to explain himself, and only does so in matters of are salvation.

Well…satan did appear to Padre Pio as a crucifix, Our Lady, St. Francis of Assisi, several of his spiritual fathers, a naked woman, and even a man in the confession booth.

I’m not saying that all cases are the devil trying to trick or tempt us, but I don’t think it is so unreasonable to think that, when we encounter some of this phenomenon, that it really is evil trying to distort our perception, or alter our focus…Or in the lives of the Saints: ruin them.

Perhaps some of these spirits are souls in Purgatory. Perhaps they are angels. This is all speculation, escpeially since I’ve never come into contact with any such phenomenon.

I’d try making the sign of the cross, reciting the Hail Mary and the Lord’s Prayer if the “spirits” were ever present.
