No, Catholics do not believe in a past life. I do not know why God allows us or gives us suffering. I really do not understand. I hope in the Catholic Church, as a sort of doctor for the prescription of spiritual, and sometimes as well, physical healing. I hope that the medicine works, even though I don’t understand why. If it were a physical illness and I had medicine, I wouldn’t need to know why it chemically functioned to have it heal me and so I also take Catholicism at literal value and have hopes that it provides some help.
