I need ideas on something nice I can do for my husband. He has put up with so much in the last year. We took in my sister with severe mental illness and all the emotional, financial, and time strains that involves. We’ve been dealing with a high-risk pregnancy and all the stress and things that go along with it (emotional wife, pelvic rest). Plus there is just the daily stress of raising a toddler, working full-time, etc, etc. He takes this all in stride, never complaining.

I really want to show him how much I love him and appreciate him and everything he does for our family. Only problem is he rarely talks about things he wants for himself so I’m not quite sure how to surprise him.

Any ideas?

If it were me, then it would depend if I were on bed rest or the equivalent. If I were not, I’d arrange for someone to hold down the fort and get the two of us out somewhere alone. If you’re strapped for cash, even a stroll alone and a picnic basket would be nice, if you made the phone calls to line it up. Try to think of the kind of dates he seemed to enjoy when you were still dating or the kind of event he looks forward to. Maybe that is a concert, maybe that is going somewhere and watching a ballgame uninterrupted. Tailor it to him.

If I were still on bed rest or if it were impossible to get anyone to mind the children so I could take him out myself, I’d call his brother or best friend and try to arrange a guy outing. If you’re up and around and simply can’t get out of the house, you can make a special picnic for them.

I’d also make it a point to find some time during the day to rub his feet, because my husband likes that, especially when he’s been too busy. There was also time before we had an electric blanket, and I would go to bed at least an hour before he did. I’d go to sleep on his side of the bed, so it would be warm when he crawled in. That doesn’t work if you sweat a lot or something like that, but it’s an idea. (Now the first one to bed turns on the heat for both…)

In the interest of full disclosure, I’m a single man. And it probably depends on the man because people in general have different preferences. But I’d say, just tell him. That would go a long way with me.And if you respond in like-kind fashion, not being a complainer, then you’re “appreciatable” too. The rest is bonus. :o

Does he have any friends or relatives you can consult? Maybe a pal in KofC?

Sometimes men will tell others about that basketball game they would love, or a new putter or such, but they don’t tell their wives because they don’t want to “burden” us.

Other than that, if you can be upright now, get a sitter for the toddler and cook a special meal. Haven’t met many men who don’t appreciate a fabulous meal in the comfort of their own home.

You could arrange some time to be alone with him, set up some candles and soft music, write everything that you love and appreciate about him on a scroll and give it to him. Be as tender as you can with your caresses looking him in the eyes with deep appreciation, let the tears flow should they come.

There is no greater gift you could give your husband than your deep gratitude and appreciation. YOU are the gift. Your love is better than anything else you could give him.

…and definitely his favorite food.

Thanks for the ideas! I no longer have any pregnancy restrictions so I think it would be best for us to get out. My sister still lives with us and never leaves so we don’t get any real alone time in our own home. Only probably is what to do in our smallish town…I’ll think of something!

Maybe a nice secluded natural area isn’t so far, if you’re in a small town. The price on those tend to be right, and no decorator can touch the romance that Nature routinely provides.

Once our kids started school, we used to go out for lunch–no daycare needed, the menu prices are lower, and we weren’t so exhausted earlier in the day. It may be that some activity can be found for your sister that will provide an alone-time opportunity for you, either as a couple or as a family. I’d highly encourage you to make that a regular occurrence.

If my wife were to plan a date for just the two of us and surprise me with it, I would be super excited. It would make it even better if you wrote him a note or a card about how much you love and appreciate him and all he does. It makes every bit of hard work and sacrifice worth it when you know it didn’t go unnoticed. Of course, if you still don’t feel like that is enough, there is one gift that he can only receive from you that most men ALWAYS appreciate…😉

I was going to say just this. No present I could buy, outing I could plan or meal I could cook would compare to one evening of fun, laughter and… Marital romance! Any way you could get grandma or another trusted sitter to keep the toddler for the night so you two could have dinner out and stay in a hotel?

Is it possible for you to get respite care for your sister so that you can have some privacy? Even though she doesn’t need all the facilities, perhaps she could stay at a rehab or nursing facility for a little while?
