I bought a little fold out pamphlet on how to pray the rosary from Amazon, as it is difficult for me to remember which mysteries go to which days and I still mix up the Apostles Creed and Hail Holy Queen prayers. But, I have been trying to pray the rosary better. I have googled and watched youtube and it seems like each is different. Some rosary instructions add the “O My Jesus” prayer after the “Glory Be”. Some add another prayer after the “Hail Holy Queen”. Is there a correct way and a wrong way to pray the Rosary? Are there specific prayers and we should follow and not add? Can we add any prayer that we want? I tried to search this topic on here but I came up with nothing.

The only actual requirement for the associated graces is to pray the 15 mysteries. The additional ptayer, creed, salve etc. are recommended.

I know a number of people who found praying the rosary in Latin to be a good way of familiarising themselves with simple latin through repetition, while simultaneously pursuing the higher goal of prayer

The Rosary is less standardized than the Divine Mercy Chaplet. Probably because it is est older and there are more slight variations.

I still find father Calloway’s book to be the best one for the basics of the rosary. There are days assigned for each of the 20 mysteries but you don’t have to follow them exactly as they are “recommended” but not mandatory. Remember, this is a tool given to us by God to help us pray to him and receive his grace. It should be a good experience, worry about the détails later, enjoy praying to the Almighty.

The most common way to pray the Rosary is praying the Creed as the opening prayer and the Hail Holy Queen as one of the closing prayers. The O My Jesus is said before you finish a decade (After the Glory Be).

Since the Rosary is generally a private devotional prayer, there is almost no wrong way in praying. You can pray it in any reverend way you want. Our Lady will still be pleased with your prayers. That being said, you can add some prayers if you want to.

If you have instagram, I would highly recommend following the account ‘manyhailmarysatatime’ - they pray the rosary live every day with a different guest at 6.45 CT (or you can replay it later). It’s a great way to learn and to pray in a group.

My friend,

Our Jesus died for us and loves us infinitely,

Our Mama Mary also loves,

So it’s ok to make this type of small mistakes,

So don’t worry and keep saying Rosary without fear…

Again God is also justice, So please don’t do sins and not confess and be like God is merciful, so I will not get hell,

Make sure you say sorry to Jesus for your sins and the sins of the world and confess the sins you have done in your life as well…

But don’t worry,

The below is the pattern of Rosary I say,

Sign of The Cross,

Apostles Creed

1 x Our Father

3 x Hail Mary for faith, hope, charity and Love of God

1 x Glory Be

First Mystery

1 x Our Father

10 x Hail Mary

1 x Glory Be

As I say the above, I will be meditating on the first mystery,

So if the first mystery is Jesus in Gethsamane,

Then I am meditating on how much Jesus suffered in Gethsamane,

If it’s St Gabriel telling Mama Mary about Infant Jesus,

Then we can meditate on St Gabriel talking to Mama Mary and Mama Mary humbly giving consent saying I am the hand maid…

After the Glory Be,

You can say Fatima Prayer,

Because it will help you and many people avoid hell when you die…

Then you can add small prayers like Jesus Christ Son Of God Please Be Merciful or Holy Spirit Please Take Over or even the Act of Contrition or a Word Of God,

If you add or don’t add also ok,

It’s not a mistake to not add,

Mother Mary in Fatima told to add Fatima Prayer ie Oh My Jesus prayer,

Then say the second mystery,

1 x Our Father,

10 x Hail Mary

1 x Glory Be

Then the 3rd mystery, 4th mystery, 5th mystery,

Then you can say Hail Holy Queen,

Litanty Of Blessed Mary

You can google all this if you can’t find also,

I am not sure if Mother Mary made it compulsory to say Fatima Prayer or not,

But it’s only few seconds and you can avoid hell…

Now below are the different mysteries,

Monday and Saturday - Joyful Mysteries - You can google

Tues and Friday - Sorrowful Mysteries - You can google

Wednesday and Sunday - Glorious Mysteries - You can google

Thursday - Luminous Mysteries - You can google

If you have any confusions,

Then you can google and find the sequence,

But the above is the general structure of Rosary…

Also please,

When you say Rosary,

Along with your personal intentions,

Can you also surrender your Rosary for the conversion of sinners, for souls in purgatory and for big sinners who are dying now…

So after saying Rosary,

You can say like,

I am surrendering this Rosary, all the prayers I said with Rosary and all the Holy Meditations I made with the Holy Rosary in the name of Jesus Christ for the conversion of sinners, for souls in purgatory and for big sinners who are dying now…

Thank you

Yeah, there’s no requirement on how to do this, other than to do it prayerfully, and take your time. The only things I’d add are:
  1. when most people talk about “the rosary”, they mean five mysteries from one of the three (or now four, if you do St. John Paul II’s Luminous Mysteries) sets of mysteries, hence they call the full original fifteen the “whole rosary”, and only one mystery a “decade of the rosary”, and
  2. beware of “rosary creep”, where you start adding prayers and prayers and prayers until suddenly your fifteen to twenty minute devotion that you had time for, becomes a 45 minute slog complete with litanies and prayers to every angel and devout but flowery-worded archaic prayers from the Industrial Age. When in doubt, just stick to Creed on the cross, Our Father - Hail Mary x3 - Glory Be - Fatima prayer, then follow the same pattern for each decade except make it Hail Mary x10. At the end the Hail Holy Queen, and your done. Easy peasy.

You may enjoy Edward Sri’s book “How to Pray the Rosary Like Never Before”. Also, I enjoy praying along with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal on YouTube while I cook dinner or along with EWTN on my TV during my kids’ nap time. EWTN has the rosary + scenes from the actual Holy Land sites, which I find fascinating to see as I’m praying the mystery. Hope that helps!

Great suggestion. Keep it simple. As many have said here, it is important to pray the Creed, the Our Father, Three Hail Mary’s and Glory be and then one our father, 10 Hail Mary prayers and one Glory be. If you’re doing it alone no need to recite the scripture reading or a short text for each mystery. At the beginning, just note down the five mysteries on a piece of paper so that you don’t forget and think about them while you pray those 10 hail mary prayers. If you get distracted, welcome to the club.

While you shouldn’t run through the prayers or say it mechanically, don’t be too hard on yourself. If you’ve succeeded in praying the rosary for 20 mins, you’ve done enough to fulfil your minimum daily prayer requirement. Start small and then I promise you, you will love praying the Rosary. But really, keep it simple. There is no right or wrong. You’re honoring the Blessed Mother and our Blessed Lord by giving them 20 mins of your time and thinking about the most important events in human history i.e. the life, death and resurrection of our savior. Everything else is details. Good luck and God Bless You.

Just one last caveat. I love praying the rosary but my fiancée doesn’t and let me be honest, we shouldn’t get caught up in forcing ourselves and others to pray the Rosary. It does get easier with time but there is a reason it is not binding on the faithful and that Mother Church provides many other devotions. Pick the one you like. I am not denigrating the power of the Holy Rosary but you shouldn’t let the focus on the praying the rosary the right way get in the way of true devotion to our Lord and our Lady, which is ultimately loving others and surrendering fully to our heavenly father’s will.

20 mysteries
I personally stick to the original 15 because they contain an inherent logic and structure:

If you number the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious Mysteries 1-5, you will find that for each chaplet you have the following sequence:
  1. First cause of the following four mysteries
  2. Immediate consequences
  3. A striking image of the faith
  4. A journey
  5. The triumphant consequences
The new Luminous Mysteries don’t follow this structure and mess up the daily prayer rhythm. Furthermore they do not form part of any of the miraculous visions calling upon us to pray the rosary.

Interesting concept. Also since the luminous mysteries are recent they were not included in miraculous visions from before as we did have them yet.

As you know they were given to us by St John Paul II. Although St-Louis de Monfort (way back when) hinted at them.

Also added to the fact that the Rosary is referred to as Bible on beads, the luminous mysteries are formidable as they are almost a complete Bible on beads on their own.

And last, if you do the Rosary mysteries and never ever meditate on one or the greatest miracles ever that is relevant to us today, the Eucharist, I believe you are missing out.

To each their own, I guess

As you know they were given to us by St John Paul II.
I appreciate St Jean Paul II’s constructive suggestion but it does not seem to me to be in the same category as the three-chaplet Rosary encouraged by Our Lady herself
