I felt the same need. I was ignorant about what was in the bible. I had heard other people quote verses that I never knew about, I really felt lacking. Since it was a book I decided to read it like any other book. From beginning to end, cover to cover. I turned off the TV, radio, locked the door and for about an hour everyday I would read. Just me and my bible. No other book, no guide. I wanted to see what the bible had to say. It was amazing. I read verses that contained sayings I’ve always heard about but never knew where they came from. Stories of creation, wars, pagans, killings, love and salvation.

I don’t know how long it took me to complete it, maybe a month. But once I got started I liked reading it so much that I looked forward to that hour everyday. It was good for my body as well as my soul. I felt my burdens disappear, my tensions vanished, my blood pressure decreased. I felt great! Do it! I hope your experience will be as great as mine was.

The order the books in the Bible that Jeff Cavin’s uses to read through the bible in chronological order is:
Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, Joshua, Judges, 1 & 2 Samuel, 1 & 2 Kings, Ezra Nehemiah, 1 Maccabees, Luke and Acts.
It takes 90 days reading 4 chapters a day to go through the Bible this way.

Once you have read the Bible this way, you will then the next time be able to read the other books, and better understand how they fit into the Bible, like the profits, the psalms, Ruth, ect.

I would recommend that you also listen to Scott Hahn’s and Jeff Cavin’s series Our Fathers Plan, it is a free download on EWTN.
It covers Jeff Cavin’s Great Adventure Bible Study, but goes a lot deeper into the Bible history, theology, and the Church’s teachings. It is an excellent audio program, and best of all, it is FREE 👍.
I can vouch for this plan as well. I’m not quite through it yet, but have listened to the OFP series while I’m on the road and I am currently in 2nd Samuel. Even though I am not through all 14 books, what I have read so far has been EMMENSELY helpful in my study, and my defense of my faith. Reading them in ~ chronological order makes the bible come alive for me. I can’t wait to get into 2nd Samuel more (King David), but I am currently (jumping ahead as it were) doing a study of Acts right now as well.

Here is the link for [Our Fathers Plan ](ftp://217.160.246.215/pub/audionet/EWTN_programs/Scott_Hahn/Father’s_Plan/)in MP3 format.
You can put them onto audio CD’s to listen to away from computer.

"so I can defend my faith"

I am not addressing the reading of the Bible part of your statement.

Iam addressing the defend my faith.

I know we should know and defend our Roman Catholic faith. I do that daily in the classroom.

This is more for the individual’s growth.

So I can defend/explain why I LOVE the things that I LOVE.

**LOVE IS IN CHARGE OF FAITH. **

**LOVE GIVES ENERGY TO FAITH. **

LOVE GIVES LIFE TO FAITH.

LOVE IS GREATER THAN FAITH.
