I’m a college student and my roommate and I have been together for about a year and a half now. We get along very, very well despite the differences in our lifestyles. I am a devout Catholic and he knows that Im “religious” and has come to respect it. He goes out and parties, drinks, smokes, and does the typical college student thing. However, in the recent months he has made promises to himself to cut down the drinking (he barely goes out now) and smoking. (he does this occasionally) He has a good heart and I know God has put him in myself and me in his for a reason. I believe it is time for me to tell him what i believe and why. Does anyone have any suggestion on how to do this and also can anyone recommend a short book that is a good, quick intro to the Catholic faith that portrays the beauty of knowing Jesus and having a personal relationship with Him in the Eucharist?

I am praying a decade for him everyday. Please any suggestions are welcome.
thank you!

Several years ago I was given a small book that might be what you’re looking for. But I don’t know if it is still available. It’s called “The Seeker’s Catechism: the basics of catholicism.” The date given for publication is 1994. It’s by Michael Francis Pennock, and published by Ave Maria Press. I hope this helps.🤷

This is dave2 Abuja Nigeria, I just want to say please be bold and listen to your heart, because it the spirit that is sending you to talk to your roommate, so please ask God to give wisdom to carry out this task that is upon you. Infact God is going to reward you at the end of it all. So once more do not be afrade go ahead and do it.👍

The most important part is to have a mutual exchange. The sharing of beliefs is a two-way street. If you want him to consider yours with an open mind, you also have to be ready to consider his with an equally open mind.

I’m an atheist, and I have many Christian friends. The topics of politics and religion isn’t avoided, it’s what we always go to whenever we talk. The most important part is a mutual respect for each other’s ideas and beliefs. That way you get to keep your friend and open each other up to whole new ways of thinking.

I would just in a very casual way ask him to join you for Holy Mass one Morning or Night. Then aftewards maybe go get some drinks somewhere starbucks etc and talk about the Holy Mass.

I think right now the best Book he could read is you my friend. Let him read the book of your lifestyle. Let him see how content and fullfilled you are in Christ. Pray for him…

Preach the Gospel always and if needed use words. Maybe Cleaning his dishes would do more to witness about the Truth of Christ then any words ever could?

I’ll quote St. Francis:

“Preach the Gospel at all times. If necessary, use words.”

We’re coming up on Advent. Maybe he’d like to join you for the midnight Christmas mass? It’s been my experience that sitting someone down and saying, “I’m going to talk about God, and you’re going to listen” is a bad idea.

Don’t point out his faults. No one likes being told they’re wrong, even when they are. I would, personally, focus more on the love of God than on “Here’s where you’re wrong according to God.” Not saying you would do this, of course.

Your actions are his best opportunity to see God. Show him love, patience, and understanding. Show him charity and faith, and eventually, I’m sure he’ll be curious enough to ask about it.
