I wish I could believe in God

I’m being told that I should believe in something that I don’t believe in. The sentence doesn’t even make sense.

I quite agree and was wrong to word it in that way. There is a very fine presentation by the late Dr. Marcus Borg who said that, once we dismiss the idea of God as interventionist, we can then begin to experience a greater cooperative relationship. I believe very strongly in what we call God, but I understand the things which happen to me are not coming from that direction, nor am I likely to escape the effects of the earthly world, evil included. I can seek strength from this unknown, but do not expect to be insulated from the life I am leading. From the perspective of the eternal, what happens here is of little importance and is brief in duration. At least, this is how I cope with it all.

I understand you. But you do have the desire to believe and that’s a grace in itself. I’ve gone through times of being unsure if I believe or not. Pray like you do believe and just see what happens…

Be patient. God will give you the gift in time. Seek God out in various ways. Prayer, study, acts of charity towards one’s neighbor…
