Who else could have given the accounts early in Luke? Probably not directly from St. Joseph, as Our Lady is accompanied by other family members in the Gospel accounts and tradition has it that he is the patron of a happy death because he died while the Holy Family still lived all in one home, before Our Lord began his public ministry. Either the stories came from Our Lady or else directly from the Holy Spirit, don’t you think? (Simeon and Anna the prophetess would surely have died by 30 years later…)What about st joseph and st Mary? That would be something
The Gospels say they are based on the accounts of witnesses, not all the same witness. Who knows whose insights might be included?Biblical scholar Ben Witherington III has a theory that the Gospel of John was actually written by Lazarus. This is because the term “beloved disciple” does not appear until the scene with Lazarus, and from that point forward it is repeated several times. The theory does have its shortfalls, of course. But Lazarus could have provided information to St. John for inclusion in the Gospel.
