but I have two questions. Is there an option for people who can’t make it to the classes? I don’t have transportation and the city bus doesn’t run after 7 (in english) and on Sundays(in spanish) which are the days for the R.C.I.A. classes. Also, is it too late to join since it’s the middle of the school/R.C.I.A. year?

Also, if I could make it too the Spanish R.C.I.A. some way, would it even be valid. I can understand and read Spanish quite well but my conversation/speaking skills are on par with your average Hispanic 7 year old.

Hi, Malia.

As a person that’s gone through RCIA myself, I do know that procedures and customs for RCIA enrollment vary from parish to parish, as well as diocese, especially at this relatively late time in the year. It’s not a strict requirement that you must enroll in RCIA when a parish starts classes, but many parishes prefer that you do for consistency in the catechism.

You should contact the pastor or RCIA instructor at the church you’d like to take classes to see if you can do things “home school” style, even at this not-so-late time. Transportation isn’t a requirement to be Catholic, per se.

I’m not versed in whether the language version of RCIA would matter. My opinion would say it is not, but it would be best to learn things in your native language.

Malia,

I’m sure that they can accommodate you in terms of transportation. I have three different people at my RCIA who offer to take me home or pick me up even with me having a bike. Trust in Him, He will find a way in the right time and place. 🙂

in our town are 3 parishes, the campus ministry, and 3 missions, and among them it is possible for someone to participate in RCIA at almost any day or time during the week, English or Spanish. In my parish you have you choice of 3 evenings, 3 weekend or special arrangments to fit your own schedule. I have never, ever, turned anyone away because it was the wrong time of year, or we did not have a class convenient for them. I will say that almost without exception, every individual for whom I have made a special effort to provide individual instruction with a catechist has failed to commmit to the process, and almost without exception people prefer to participate in a group with others, and make better progress as part of a larger class.

call your nearest parish first, ask to have an appointment with the pastor or director, as opposed to a casual phone conversation with the secretary, so you can explain your own needs, where you are now in your state of life and so they can work with you. If they are inflexible try another parish, or call the Office of Catechetics and Evangelization in your diocese.

I am currently in a 1-on-1 experience with RCIA with the Archdiocese in my area. I was concerned that I was unable to attend an RCIA “class” that began in September, and called the Archdiocese. They welcomed me in, and now work with my work schedule, and meet with me weekly by appointment. I would recommend making a phone call, you will be amazed how accommodating the Church can be!

Good luck and God bless!
