I am trying to find an Icon of the 12 Tribes of Israel. I don’t see one at my usual haunts (Skete and Light-n-life) Do you know if there is one?

That’s because there isn’t any.

Now, if you’re looking for the 12 PATRIARCHS, they will probably be on an icon of the Holy Forefathers of Christ.

Would the 12 Patriarchs be Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, Solomon and others? As opposed to the heads of the 12 tribes?

Here’s the reason, this may help.

I have a 2.5 year old foster son and I have used the Icon of the Praxis of the Apostles to teach him the names of the Apostles depicted in the Icon. He just finished memorizing all of them last night, it only took about 3 weeks or so. I figure in 2 weeks we’ll need to expand on that and I wanted to go in this direction with the 12 tribes.

The 12 Patriarchs in particular would be the sons of Jacob: Joseph, Judah, Issachar, Dan, Zebulon…and I can’t think of the rest.

But there’s a song listing them all in JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECNICOLOR DREAMCOAT.

I like this Icon a lot. Is there an explination with a list of who’s who?
Their names are inscribed in Greek in their halos, which can’t be seen in this low-res image.

However, Abraham is on the bottom center, holding the baby. Jacob is on the extreme right, holding his 12 sons in a mantle. Isaac is between them.

Melchizidek is in the center, wearing his mitre and holding a tray with bread–deliberately bearing a strong resemblance to the Byzantine discos and Prosphora.

King David with his crown is on the uppermost row, second from the left.

Hope this helps.

Heck yeah it helps! I am going to get this Icon - it is perfect.

My thanks to all!
