I recently redrafted my thesis entitled How can the predominantly Orthodox practice of iconography help contemporary Roman Catholics practice hesychia?

Hmmm, what about us byzantine catholics and our practice of iconography?
 
Perhaps I should change the title to ‘the predominantly Eastern Christian practice of iconography’?

However, isn’t it historically true that Byzantine Catholic churches have used Renaissance paintings, statues etc. to actively distinguish themselves from Orthodoxy?

No that isn’t true. At a time we were Latinized and we shied away from icons to the things you list so as to appear “Catholic” but as we return to our traditions we are removing the statues and such and replacing them with Icons.
 
Despite your reservations about describing iconography & hesychia as being predominantly Orthodox, what do you think of the thesis?

I’m afraid I can’t think of any ways to shorten your essay. However, I think I may have found a typo at the top of page seven.

I’m assuming it is supposed to read, “returned a precious eighteenth century Russian icon…” Perhaps not?

I did like the essay though. It was very informative. I didn’t realize that there was such hostility towards icons (still).

Great Essay! Unfortunately I can’t figure out how to shorten it either. I think it should be published somewhere either on the web, or in print, it is very informational.🙂

Do you think I need to elaborate on any of the points in the essay?

Do you know of any comprehensive studies on the prayer life of your average contemporary Catholic? For example how much time does the average Catholic set aside for prayer each day? I think this might be useful, as it would highlight the case for a greater emphasis on contemplative spirituality in the Church, assuming most Catholics don’t pray as much nowadays.
