Why do Eastern Catholics have icons instead of statues? What are some famous Eastern icons? What are the principles in creating new icons?

Google “the writing of icons”, or Iconography.

Icons are “written”, meaning they tell a story, a history in pictures, much like stained glass windows. Each element in the icon tells/teaches something.

They are really quite fascinating.
 
I have a number of icons that were given to me or I have collected. As long as one knows the difference between an icon and a sacramental I enjoy looking at them. To me they are little reminders.
