Hello,

I would like to learn how to pain eastern Catholic icons, but I don’t know the way. Is there anyone who can help me? I believe the Lord is calling me to do this. I would also like to learn the history of icons.

My grandfather painted icons, and I would like to follow in his path.

Thank you for any help you could offer.

There are various styles. You would have to be an apprentice and pray with an established iconographer. There are some in the United States or Canada, but the majority are in Europe, Egypt, or abroad.

I have a Catholic lady friend who has “written” many icons. Over ten years ago she went to a five-day retreat for the first time, in order to write her first icon.

They were instructed to pray throughout all the preparation of the wood, and then the brush strokes of the icon.

She gave a talk on them that I heard, and had shown many absolutely beautiful icons.

There are many books available that tell about icons.

Check out the videos, and the instruction pages.

They do various classes around the US. They are great for painters, and you get lots of lectures on the theology of icons. The classes are worth every penny. I hope to do another next year.

Also Google “icon painting course”. There are many in England, including a two year part time program with Adian Hart through the Prince’s school of Traditional Arts

It’s one of those things that you need to learn in-person.

An easy way might be taking a summer workshop to start. I know in the past, St. Thomas More College in New Hampshire has offered week-long summer workshops before.
