I am kind of an icon collector and have some questions about the writing both on the icons and in the books which Jesus holds in some of the icons. In the icon of Christ high priest, what does the scripture that he is holding say? I have always wondered what these icons say (unfortunately I can’t read Greek). thanks a lot!

Also, (I don’t know if I need another thread), can some one give me patristic quotes that predate the seventh ecumencial council, describing Icons as grace filled windows into heaven? Thanks.

St. John Damascus’ 3-Treatises were a direct response to the iconoclast movement leading up to the 7th e. c. I think his work is still the definitive work on the topic and I cannot recommend it highly enough: Three Treatises on Divine Images.
