After seeing a few friends and family do this, I’m wondering how many people here had similar experiences.

Have you ever made a statement to the effect of “I’m never letting my kids do X” or “I’ll let my kids do Y because I wasn’t allowed to” or “I’m going to insist that my kids do Z”?

The inevitable follow up – how long after you had the kids did those statements get “forgotten”?

The last example I just saw, a friend of mine was notorious for wanting to make sure her future kids were going to eat healthy and never have any “junk food” – even though she was allowed to, because she was an adult. Of course, I just saw her in line at a McDonalds with her 4 year old, gave her a knowing glance, and she just said “Shut up. We were Christmas shopping and in a hurry!”

I laughed. She laughed. Good times had by all.

I remember when my best friend’s child was born (12 years ago), she wouldn’t let her have candy/sweets of any sort. Not even at Halloween, Easter or Christmas. I called her on it many times trying to go with the “everything in moderation” argument. She just wouldn’t budge.
She finally did relent several years later. And in my opinion, that was a good thing.

The list of things I’d never let my kid do was tossed out the window once she was about 2 years old, LOL. After that it was - if it keeps her quiet, makes her happy, and isn’t too bad for her, whatever works!! haha! 🙂

No child of mine would need a pacifier. They were for people who didn’t take the time to find out what their baby needed. Well, we bought one on the way home from the hospital! 😃

LOL!

This was mine, too. No pacifiers. We made it to 4 months before she had one, and I was so torn about giving it to her, but she was SO much happier once I folded. Oh well. I think I was afraid she wouldn’t nurse if I gave her one, which was entirely untrue. 🙂

My kids are not going to eat sweets.

Or play video games.

Or have a computer.

Or watch TV.

:eek::rolleyes:

Like, yeah, we sat around being the Waltons…reading the Bible by the light of an oil lamp…😃

Ha! I was the best parent ever, then I had kids of my own.

I will not let my kids run away to their rooms and leave the rest of us at the dinner table… (Ahem, thinking of my brother at the moment ).

I will not let my kids use the Internet until they have a sufficient level of maturity. Man, I thought I was so mature when I was 12 but I was most certainly not and ended up getting into things I deeply regret :(.

I will not let my kids wear immodest clothing, I will not even buy it for them. I also won’t let them wear make up for a long time, because it’s unnecessary I believe.

I will not let them eat a bunch of junk food. But I won’t be a health nut either.

I will not let my kids whine to get their way. Ugh!

😊 I might end up that way. My friends constantly accuse me of acting like a mother, and I’m 16.

The only thing worse than thinking about the stuff my kids would NEVER do but did is thinking about the things they would of course habitually do…and don’t!!

But hey, when you still wind up with children who, in spite of your inept generalship, are still among the world’s finest people, you can only give thanks! 👍 😃

Great thread topic!

God gave me the grace and humility early on to not pre-suppose too much about fatherhood! I’m sure there were a few early on…I forget now how it was 16 years ago. I did learn early on to keep a lot of ‘helpful’ suggestions to myself however.

Sometimes if I’m walking through the grocery store and I see some kid having a fit…I’ll stroll by and say “I’m glad MY kids never did that”. And have a hearty laugh.

No gun toys of any kind, ever. Then my 4 year old started making them out of tinker toys and legos. Oh well!

I was never going to allow kids to eat in the car. If we were running errands the children could wait until we got home, and if we were on a road trip we’d stop and eat.

HA HA HA HA HA HA

Our kids saved their worst behavior for the privacy of our home, something for which I am very thankful…but it had nothing to do with us!! When people tell me what little angels they are, though, I am both thankful and amused!

IOW: When it comes to parenting: Sometimes you are better off lucky than good! 😃

Yeah, I soon realized that the plastic kind were much safer than wire hangers and pointy sticks and whatever else they turned into weapons of war.

This is exactly the advice my mom gave me when she met her first granddaughter
in the hospital.

I think I gave her a “you’re nuts” look.

I have a feeling I will be eating my words.

I remember saying to myself before she was born…my kiddo will only be breastfed and we’ll only cloth diaper and use homemade wipes.

After she wouldn’t latch I said…okay, plan b. I will pump exclusively for her.

8 months later…bring on the formula and the back up sposies and wipes.

Ha! When my last daughter was born my wife said the same thing, but I remember what happened after our first daughter…

So I discreetly purchased some formula so I wouldn’t have to go out at 3:00 AM to do it in an emergency…
