Ideas for evangelizing through online/digital media and writing?

Hi everyone,

I am a beginner at evangelizing (only recently came into the Church) but I have been feeling called to do so lately.

I would say my strongest skill/gift is my writing ability (I was “that girl” in college who spent 8 hours a day in the library working on 30 page research papers and loved every minute of it…haha).

I guess I need some help/advice on how how to get started. I thought maybe I should start a blog where I could post articles I write or something like that. I think I mostly need ideas on the topics I should cover (I’ll of course be researching everything and will provide my sources/citations, etc).

Any suggestions or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance

Write to learn. You can learn quite a bit online because you will be instantly criticized by those who disagree with you. Don’t let this bother you. Learn from it. Is the criticism valid?
Could you have rephrased what you said better? Is what you said true? Was it helpful? Was it a knee-jerk response to something someone else wrote? Was it researched? Was it relevant to the conversation?

Take what you write seriously. Constantly look for better ways to express yourself.
Read carefully what others write.

Don’t jump to conclusions. This is my biggest fault. I will not read a post through.

Always write with the idea in mind that the person who is reading your post is an especially loved child of God. Remember that this person has a guardian angel watching and perhaps has placed you were you need to be to help. Do not write something that you would not want friend or family member to read.

The things that I have written that I have been most ashamed of are the times when I try to be clever or sarcastic.

Also, don’t be afraid of apologizing when you go over board.

Thank you, Helen! Very good advice. Do you have any suggestions for coming up with specific topics to write about? Catholicism is so very deep that I hardly know where to start. I thought maybe one approach could be to start by looking at current events and examining how the Catholic faith views what’s going on…for example, same sex unions, physician assisted suicide, etc. Any thoughts?

If I was writing a blog on the faith, I’d do a regular series on issues a lot of people are interested in, but that are not so controversial that you will put people off before they have finished reading the title. Explanation of the sacraments, catholic practices, the Mass, key doctrines would probably be well-read, especially if they use Bible/catechism quotations. You could also answer questions from readers. Also, focus on what interests you.
