meat, fish, animal products, good-tasting food, oil, seasoning (especially salt), all food except a vegetable and water, all food except water, all drink and food together.

this is a list beginning with the minimum and going upwards, I know people who do different things on it

Traditionally one should fast and abstain from meat as well as meat byproducts.

Of course, one could limit TV time and read the works of the Saints.

When the bishops changed the rules my wife didn’t. We stayed with the practice of abstaining from meat.

Don’t forget that today is not a fast day because it has the rank of Solemnity, being a part of the Easter Octave! Any Friday penances should not begin again until next week. Although I do ponder if they should be postponed throughout the entire Easter season, considering that it is a time for abundant joy and feasting. A priest once mentioned this to me in Confession and I have thought about it since. I would love to hear (name removed by moderator)ut from you all!

Thanks, and may God bless you all with Easter joys! 🙂

I think that I also heard that there should be no Friday penances till Pentecost.
Not sure. Is it true?

Meat is the simplest for me, all year round (except today!)

As stated above, you don’t need to give up anything today (Friday, April 17). The Easter Octave is basically a super-sized solemnity.
Bring on the burgers 🍔 and bacon 🥓 !

Friday penance applies to other Fridays in the Easter season… only Friday in the Octave is exempt (unless another solemnity happens to fall on Friday). Of course I would generally agree that other Fridays in the Easter season should be more “joyful” than Fridays in Lent…But under canon law they are still days of penance.

That said, today is a solemnity - Easter Friday - I’m tempted to order lamb!

I’ve been a cradle Catholic most my life, but havw been getting more devout/interested in the church. All that said, I HAD NO IDEA WE HAD TO DO THIS OUTSIDE OF LENT. Ugh, I feel so stupid. I guess my plan is maybe to read more of the Bible on Fridays? I could see abstaining sweets being something I do

Meat.

For me, refraining from meat all year round is a lot easier. However, if I do eat meat on a Friday (outside of Lent) then I will do some other penanance like a Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet, extra scripture reading, etc.

Don’t worry… I once went to confession and confessed about skipping the Friday Penance (outside of Lent) and the priest (who was in late 50s or early 60s) had no idea what I was talking about.

I explained it to him and he asked me where I read it. I replied, “on the website of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops.”

He was shocked!

Holy moly, and I felt bad for telling my dad about it! What an odd thing to be so little known.
