I truly wish the infallible teachings in the CC would be asterisked or something. It would be interesting to know where there is room to discuss, and where there’s not. When I was in parochial school, things like limbo were taught right alongside of doctrine. It would have been nice to have known that limbo was a theory, not dogma. Such differences do indeed matter.
Celibacy is not a teaching. It is a discipline. Disciplines can change.
The Church is infallible in her teachings.
Thus all teachings in the Catechism that it presents as Church teachings, or the teachings of Jesus are the result of infallible teaching thus are without error.
Everything the Church teaches for all Christians is the result of infallible teaching authority.
The reason that the Church is infallable is because Christ is infallable and the Spirit is infallable. The CHURCH is the Body of Christ with Jesus as it’s head, therefore it cannot err when teaching. It is infallable.
Therefore you can trust all the teachings of the Catechism to be true. That is why the Pope said the Catechism is a sure norm for teaching the faith.
Of course this only applies to the official latin version of the Catechism.
The english version has at least one translation error I found in paragraph 125.
It reads,
"The Gospels are the heart of all the Scriptures “because they are our principal** source** for the life and teaching of the Incarnate Word, our Saviour”
The correct quotation from Vatican II, from the latin, that the Catechism cites should read,
The Gospels are the heart of all the Scriptures “because they are our principal
witness for the life and teaching of the Incarnate Word, our Saviour”
All Church teachings, because they come from God fit together. If some one tries to change one teaching, it won’t fit with the others. That is how I found that translation error. Because the Church teaches the Gospel that the apostles PREACHED is the source of all saving truth and moral discipline, because it comes from Jesus who is the fullness of revelation.
Thus, Tradition is the original source of all the teachings of Jesus. The written Gospels, then could not the the prinicpal source of the teachings of Jesus, though they could be the principal source for the details of the life of Jesus.
