Has anyone ever read or skimmed this book? I’m wondering if it would be a useful tool for learning about/teaching the Catholic faith.
Nope he doesn’t there are two… I agree with you on Catholicism for Dummies… The other one I don’t care for.Do you perhaps mean Catholicism for Dummies? It’s by Rev. John Trigilio Jr and Rev. Kenneth Brighenti, both Ph.D.'s, co-hosts of EWTN’s television show where call-in questions about the Catholic Faith are answered.
Excellent book. Simple. Basic. Comprehensive.

Great book than!Actually, you’re right! I DID mean Catholicism for Dummies. I used to have it, and didn’t remember the title right!
“Baptism by desire” (CCC 1258, 1260, 1281) and “invincible ignorance” (CCC 846, 847, 848) are magisterial doctrines of the Church and rest on the same authority as the Trinity and the rest of Catholic doctrine. To the extent that any Catholic disbelieves them, they become Protestants who, by definition, pick and choose the doctrines they will accept and those that they refuse to accept.I have to say that I have read “Catholicism for Dummies” and was very impressed by it. Of course, parts of it were silly, but that’s just the nature of those books. But the information was great. There’s things in there many Catholics would disagree with, like “invincible ignorance” and “baptism by desire”, but for the most part it seemed like good Catholic teaching and plenty of history was in there. Good biographies on popular Catholic people and places.
That is the “Idiots” oneIt’s ok for someone that knows nothing. I didn’t care for it, There were some things in there that didn’t square up. I wish I had it here now I would point them out. It also made references to high profile catholics like Madonna and Ted Kennedy, I didn’t appreciate that.
You must have another book in mind. Catholicism for Dummies says women may not be ordained to the diaconate, priesthood, or episcopy in either the Catholic or the Eastern Orthodox Churches – page 222.The Idiot’s Guide also indirectly bangs the drum for women’s ordination. Avoid this book. Scott
They are two different books… here is a link to a review of the idiots one…You must have another book in mind. Catholicism for Dummies says women may not be ordained to the diaconate, priesthood, or episcopy in either the Catholic or the Eastern Orthodox Churches – page 222.
The two priests who authored this book are absolutely orthodox – faithful to the Magisterium and to the Holy Father. Otherwise, they would not be on EWTN!

You must be thinking of a different book. I found no mention of Madonna or Ted Kennedy in Catholicism for Dummies. The book mentions President John F. Kennedy as the first Catholic president and says historians debate whether or not he was a practicing Catholic (pages 314-15).It’s ok for someone that knows nothing. I didn’t care for it, There were some things in there that didn’t square up. I wish I had it here now I would point them out. Thanks!They are two different books… here is a link to a review of the idiots one…

Idiots = bad
Dummies = good…
Since 1979, by order of the Vatican, Hans Kung has been prohibited from teaching Catholic theology. He still teaches, but he can’t call it “Catholic.”.
I believe if not mistaken Mr. Kung lost his reprimanded by Rome.
Your RCIA teacher is correct, in my opinion. He dissents from the teaching of the Church.I’ve been told by RCIA teacher at my Church that Father McBrien, Chair of Norte Dame Theology Department is practically a heretic.
Archbishop Peter Gerety of Newark, NJ withdrew his imprimatur for the book in 1984 at the request of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (headed by Cardinal Ratzinger). Paulist Press stopped publishing it. But the author got a non-Catholic publisher.Christ Among Us lost its IMPRIMATUR status by Cardinal Ratzinger in 1980s I believe.
Catholics should buy orthodox Catholic books and donate them to their library.The Public Libraries do occasionally let a othodox one sneak in occassionally like like Harry Crocker’s TRIUMPH.
The Dummies book is wonderful. It is lighthearted, but also has depth. I am going broke with this one, I keep giving it to people to read and buying new ones. My 8th grade CCD class always gets a kick out of it (I keep it on the lectern).Do you perhaps mean Catholicism for Dummies? It’s by Rev. John Trigilio Jr and Rev.
