What causes a confirmation to be invalid? If the sponsor is in mortal sin, like lesbianism, is that cause for an invalid confirmation…that should be redone with a suitable sponsor?
Confirmation is valid if the proper matter is used (chrism), the recipient has been baptized, the proper minister is present (priest or bishop depending on circumstances), and the minister has the proper intention.
The spiritual state of the sponsor has no affect on the validity of the sacrament of confirmation. In fact, even if the recipient is in a state of mortal sin the sacrament is still valid (though illicitly received).
