If a couple is not married by priest, are they living in sin?

I just asked a question and I don’t think I asked it properly. I meant if a couple is married but they were not married by a priest, are they living in mortal sin?
 
Dear Anjel,

If the individuals are Catholics and are married outside of the Chruch, the Church does not recognize their marriage as valid.
If they are living as husband and wife, they are livng in mortal sin.
