If all nuns are ”Brides of Christ“ how do I explain to my friend that this does not equal polygamy?

I always have referred to nuns as married to Jesus, but recently my friend was confused how this is not polygamy. I tried to explain how priests are married to the Church, but that doesn’t make it polygamy either, and then brought up how Mary is the spouse of the Holy Spirit, while also the daughter of the Father, while also the Mother of Jesus, but this does not mean that the relationship is incest, but just something we cannot understand, but I think my explaining just confused them more, and was wondering if there was a more sufficient explanation for why nuns being married to Christ is not polygamy. Thank you!

Because this is a “spiritual” marriage. They profess wows of celibacy and fidelity to Jesus Christ (GOD) very much similar to what the matrimony between a man and woman exchange.
Of course there will be no conjugal exchange or children.
So quite different yes?
Peace!

It should also be pointed out that not all women religious consider themselves "brides of Christ.’ While this is meaningful to some sisters, it is by no means essential to religious life, and many women do not find this a meaningful dimension to their spirituality.

It’s not polygamy because God is infinite and perfect, so He can give Himself totally to each soul… and it’s a spiritual spousal relationship. Also, the Church is the Bride of Christ, and souls within the Church share in its identity… that’s another reason. Hope that helps!

Well, I’d argue that nuns per se are not brides of Christ anymore than monks… but that is the topic of my dissertation 🙂 So, in my view, no explanations necessary for the friends…

This is very helpful. I have watched many YouTube videos and noticed the reference to Bride of Christ. When I was in seminary as a male I have heard of marrying the church but it was not the every day or every minute focus. There are other meaningful dimensions to spirituality.

I guess watching too many Sister videos about the calling. Thanks for pointing out that this is not a requirement for becoming a women religious. Very helpful!
