Is our sister planning to raise her daughter as a Catholic? If so, it would be good to encourage the sister to have the child baptized. It might help the child in the long run to feel differently about herself, since she would see that others take the faith seriously. Also it would give her graces as she grows up.
In my opinion, children should not be given candy except on special occasions. My grandson got in the habit of asking for a toy every time his parents went to the store, but I don’t do that. Kids are self centered. They need to be gently told that they have plenty of toys at home, and why don’t we play with them when we get back? Also, suggest something healthy when she asks for candy— fruit or a cracker.
