Oh DeaconJar, that is just another beautiful post!

It brings to mind someone’s post here at CAF that so impressed me and yet I cannot even remember what this member wrote, save this : " I have just found out that I have been **blessed **with 4th stage Hodgkins Lymphoma " (I think I got the name of the cancer right but the words here are not verbatim as I cannot remember now which thread it was).

This also echoe’s St Ignatius’s “Suscipe”, which I here post for those who do not know it

What does this mean?

Luke 14:26,27

""If any one comes to me without hating his father 7 and* and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple."*

What does this mean? Does this mean that we can ignore or violate the Forth Commandment, to - "Honor your father and your mother…?

****I don’t think so. I believe that this verse is interpreted differently in Protestant circle than it is in Catholicism. Am I wrong? ****

What does this verse mean to you?

The below footnote (#7), was taken from the on-line, Catholic, NAB Bible. This is what I believe it means…What do you think? Does this create a problem for some non-Catholic Christians, when it comes to loving Mary the Mother of God?

7 [26] Hating his father . . . : cf the similar saying in Matthew 10:37. The disciple’s family must take second place to the absolute dedication involved in following Jesus
(see also Luke 9:59-62).

37 "Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38 and whoever does not take up his cross 15 and follow after me is not worthy of me.

sure some one would have answered you well but i am lazy to read whole thread.

The biblical meaning of hate is like least.

So put G-d before Father and Mother … in doing this we honor them.

I agree and I believe that the key word here is, “everything”… Meaning that God comes first before everything else! He comes first, before the world, our possessions, ourselves and even our family.

So, to use this verse to argue against the Catholic Churches view of St. Mary, doesn’t make any sense and makes it apparent that those who hold this errant opinion, have taken this verse out of context and do not understand the real message contain within this verse.

I have always viewed the word here as not “hate” the way we think of it today when we hear that word. Jesus would not contradict the Word of God to honor parents. I like to look at it from the original Greek meaning that you put God fist and God comes before family. If you look at the surrounding verses the people that were being called by Jesus to follow him had excuses as to why not at this moment follow. What Jesus is literally saying is not to hate them as in a anger hat but be willing to lay all aside for service to God. Remember Jesus said the first and great commandment is to Love God with you heart soul mind and strength. I do not see parents there. the second was love neighbor as self. Here is where parents fall, God first and neighbor and family second.

Let me put it another way. If I listened to my family when I started in the ministry, I would not be still in it some 22 years later. If I listened to them I would think that I was not fit because of what they knew of how I was growing up. God does not look at ministers that way, He does not call the qualified He qualifies the called. To take it to personal level if every person in the church is “called out” (which is the literal meaning of the Greek word eklesia that gets translated “church”) we are also called to put God first above family.
By “honoring” our mother and father we take care of them in old age when they can no longer take care of themselves; just as they did for us when we were children. That would be the literal meaning of “honor” thy father and mother.
