If God exists then why won't He answer my prayers?

Hey everyone. I’ve been having a lot of very serious doubts about the existence of God lately. I’ve tried in the past to be a good Catholic and I have prayed and prayed and prayed for God to cure my son of his weight gain problem but it is like God has a deaf ear to my prayers. He refuses to help my son. So, if God does exist and He is a God of love, why isn’t He answering my prayers for the cure of my son?

I’ll say a prayer for you. I understand your doubt. Just remember to pray for G-d’s Will to be done over our own wills. Perhaps he is answering your prayer from a different angle or timetable than what you think you would prefer.

God isn’t a wish giving machine. Pray first to be cooperative to His will and then pray for petitions. He will answer your prayers in the way He best sees fit. Not the way you best see fit.

Perhaps it would help to read about St. Monica. She prayed for years and years for her spouse unwaveringly and was rewarded.

Maybe God would like your son to do the asking.
There’s a lot God can do when we ourselves get plugged into him. God wants that connection with us.

Do you have access to healthcare, for preventative advice from a doctor or nurse practitioner? Is your son able to take part in physical activities, even if it is as simple as walking? Can you speak with your priest?

Praying for answers to your prayers. 🙏

Yes, my son sees several different specialists at a children’s hospital and he also sees a nurse practitioner for biweekly weight checks. He has a G Tube which is a type of feeding tube as well because he barely eats.

When you don’t know why God isn’t answering a prayer that’s when you put your trust in him that he knows better than us. Remember even Jesus prayer wasn’t answered in the garden. Yours might be answered in time.

He Holly, I’m sorry to hear about the difficulties with your son. I’ll say some prayers for him as well. I know it’s a difficult time, but God hears your prayers. It can be really hard, but occasionally he responds through others, through caregivers, through family, etc. Gods ways are sometimes tough for us to understand. Why’s sometimes aren’t clear to us. However he hasn’t abandoned you or your son that I can say for sure. Have you spoken with your pastor?

Ok, he might be able to help out more than we could, being nearer to you and your family. Occasionally doubts have been some of the best times for growth for me personally.I really had to stretch on occasion, but I grew a lot during those times. Really though God does hear you. He really won’t abandon you.

I forget where I learned this but here goes:

God has three answers for prayer: Yes, Later and No.

If what you ask is for His glory, the good of others and your own soul, then Yes or Later

If what you ask is not for His glory, the good of others and/or your own soul, then No.

Think of “No” as this: Your child sees a beautiful silver object and wants to play with it. Shiny! Boo-ti-ful! You are aghast because your child is reaching for the carving knife!!! 😫😱 You take it away and he cries because you took his shiny, boo-ti-ful object to play with. You took the knife away to save him from hurting himself. Then you give him his toy ball and he is happy once again.

God acts in the same way. He takes away things that are bad for us or others so we can truly play and not hurt ourselves spiritually.

God is not going to answer all our prayers the way we wish or in the timeline we wish.
Why does your prayer not being answered the way you wish, give you doubts about the existence of God.
There is nothing in Catholic teaching that says God will answer our prayers exactly how we like and in a timely manner.

Because it seems cruel of God to continue to make my son suffer like this. We’re doing everything we can to help him gain weight but it’s not working so we asked God for help but if he is there, he’s refusing to help.

You are a mother, it is totally reasonable you feel this way. The question of suffering and its relation to God has occupied humanity since Adam and Eve.

A relative of mine was badly burnt at 14 mths or so, his recovery in hospital was very hard on him, dressings changes were so painful. He and the family got through it. Patience is the key here and keeping positive for your son. Also an important lesson in holding firm to faith and love of God through his time of your family suffering.
