I read this first story and others because I once remembered my psychology teacher telling me that there are intersexed people that can be raised as either sex. I am bewildered by this comcept and need some opinions and explanations. In the book of Genesis(forgot verse) God made made people male and female. But according to statistics of this pbs and other websites there are many people born each year with so called “ambiguous genitals.”

Consider the first story in the link. The baby is born looking like a male with all the male genitals but later on starts getting breasts and larger hips and a woman shape.NOTE: the person’s male genitals worked. The person is forced to get testosterone shots to become more manly but later on it life discovers “he” is a chemical “she”. As a Catholic what do you think would be the right choice or choices because maybe teo would be ok. I am confused. Should the parents have
(1) done what they did.
(2) Had doctors perform surgery and remove the male genitals that worked
(3) Just let he/she develop naturally without interfering.

My conscience is telling me three because you are leaving the person as God made them

Yes, God made them, but nature can sometimes get in the way. In other words, imperfections sometimes happen, and I don’t think God is the reason behind every birth defect.

The first thing to do is of course pray.

I don’t know much about the science of birth defects or the differences of the sexes, but I’m sure that it’s possible for a baby’s sex to be mistaken and this will give them a lot of problems during life.

As for making changes when the child is grown up, add a lot of prayer, of course, and talk to a priest, of course.

This is a difficult situation. I think the usual answer is that regardless of the genitals, every baby has either the XX or XY chromosome structure, making that baby either female, or male, respectively.

But this isn’t alway true – babies born with Klinefelter Syndrome, for example, have the XXY chromosome structure – are they male or female? Sometimes, there are no simple answers.

It depends on how you genetically define male. If you define “male” as having an XY chromosome structure, then you have some interesting issues with regard to people that have disorders such as Klinefelter’s. However, if you define “male” as having a Y chromosome, then it doesn’t matter how many Xs the person have. Do they have a Y? then they are male. If they do not, then they are female.

So, depending on how you define it, it can be a simple answer.

Dang it! Wish I paid more attention to this issue while watching the Discovery Channel. I think there are also times when the chromosomes aren’t a good indicator; that an XY might “really” be a female and vice versa. There are other tests that can be run to help (I think related to hormones and other naturally-produced chemicals).

This is a very complex issue and I have no idea what a good answer is. I do consider it a mutation from the norm; not that there is anything intrinsically wrong with those who have this condition (I need glasses; I consider this a deviation from the preferred norm and just part of the world we live in). I have been interested in seeing how others respond to this question. Very tough issue to deal with given how our society is ordered.
