If God made you a missionary in a distant place,

A new topic to think about and discuss that should be fun.

Consider the following circumstances:

God comes to you and says “X” , "I want you to pick someplace where you have never lived before, move your family there and do missionary work. You can specify the type of work and I will facilitate it."

Have fun. 😃

"Dear Lord:

Send me where you need me most and let me know what it is you want me to do."

Good prayer.

I have found often to this sort of prayer that He comes back and says you choose.

If instructed by God to move and be a missionary and I had to choose where and what, I would choose to move the the Washington DC area and be a missionary to the USCCB putting on special retreats for the bishops, providing guidance on spirituality, and strongly supporting the teachings of the magisterium and then trust in God’s word that he would facilitate it.

I have been doing some of this work over the internet and via email with very limited at best (in what I have seen) success.

I would ask him to place me with either young children or youth or old people. I would also ask him to soften my heart and fill it with so much love that they would see Jesus there. Oh heck. Sounds like a good thing now to pray for.

God: “No sense moving. There are many lukewarm people to minister to in your own circle of friends.”

Me : " Ugh! My friends already think I am a nutcase. But Your will be done…"

So I think God would use me exactly where I am. To help strengthen my children’s faith, my friends and co-workers by living as a good Catholic example (mind you I struggle daily with that - Jesus help me!).

While my friends do scoff at me often for being a fanatical religious nut, they also one by one , have come to me seeking advice or asking for prayer. Even asking my opinion, then discounting my answer, which usually has a religious twist to it. Maybe they go off and think about my answer and the Holy Spirit uses that for another day? Who knows.

Maybe with you, God is using this experience to test your perseverence. I think, if I understand you correctly, you are not getting the success you want as quickly as you hoped.

In God’s eyes, maybe he is posturing you for something great - yet you need to build, be patient, wait wait wait for that very moment when God springs you into your huge and enormously successful ministry? God feels you are not ready yet, because He has something great planned - maybe in a direction that you didn’t think of?

I have found your material, insight and postings to be of much help. Maybe you just aren’t aware of how beneficial your ministry is…because internet communication is so intangible. You will never see the impact you have made on my life or others via internet ( until judgement day of course, when all is made crystal clear). That would be God’s way of keeping us humble servants!

That is why God is so awesome.

I have worked from time to time with the homeless in our city, espically with shelters and hot meals, over the years I have seen more and more families with young children living on the streets and it breaks my heart,😦 so…God would probably give me that kind of mission and I’m not so sure what place i would choose…I would hope to stay in my owm community, but I would leave it in his hands.🙂

i would love to move to brazil and help the poor. the situation is so bad there, the separation between the rich and poor so ridiculously enormous. huge numbers of the poor live in sanitary landfills (dumps) and don’t even have houses or food or clothes enough to stay away from the disease-ridden areas. i don’t know what i could do, exactly. i sometimes wish i’d studied medicine so i could go help with medical needs in third world countries. but i do lay my gifts, such as they are, at His feet. may He see fit to use them in accordance to His will.

I think I would just about have to chose New York City. There are the poor who need hope, the rich to irritate, the unloved to love, and all of the other stuff that often gets overlooked in this “great” city in the "great country.

When we think of missions, we usually think of somewhere overseas. But we need missionaries just as much here at home. We need to speak out against the truth right here at home. Our politicians are no longer representatives of the people. Only of the special interest groups. Only of those who can afford to get their attention. The rich get richer…

I would ask to stay right were I am, in the protestant bible belt. I get so tired of being asked all the time, “Have you been saved?” and, “Have you accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour?” I think these fine and God fearing folks need to hear the WHOLE truth, and not just a partial truth.

Oh!, as a side note. Just yesterday I had a person ask me if I accepted Jesus into my heart. My response?

I not only have Jesus in my heart, but, I also receive His BODY-BLOOD-SOUL-DEVINITY everyday at Holy Mass 👍
That kinda threw this person for a loop 😃

I just asked my 12 year old grandaughter where she would go to be a missionary and she suggested that she would go New York City or some other big city where Teens need to have someone teach them about who God really is and how much He really loves them and wants to help them. So I guess that’s where I would go…
out of the mouths of babes…
and good Catholic School training followed through by her parents!👍

Chiapas State in Mexico, I have fallen in love with its indigenous people whom I have had the pleasure of meeting and listening to their stories. I will challenge God, when He makes this offer, to restore my health so I can to the work assigned.

hey christybeth - you said ‘We need to speak out against the truth right here at home.’

we do? 😉

Say, Christy Beth, don’t “irritate” the rich! Inspire their compassion and their generosity. When you think about it, the family of Bethany must have been quite wealthy (Lazarus had a stone tomb; they entertained Jesus’ whole group often.) The rich need “missionaries” – not to scorn them for their wealth but to challenge them to live up to the responsibility of having been “given much.” Many wealthy people in New York have risen to that challenge without broadcasting it.

Great question, you say distant, but I don’t think I’d have to move out of the place I live to start a mission because:
  1. Lots of people haven’t even said ‘hello’ to God let alone know Him
  2. Lots of homeless, poverty stricken people
  3. Lots of young women needing help with pregnancies they didn’t plan on
  4. Lonely elderly people
  5. Drug abuse
  6. People with terminal illnesses (inc AIDS)
I could go on, but the mission starts at home , if I HAD to go anywhere else, I’d go where there is ANY war and help orphaned and homeless children. Children always get forgotten in wars.

I’m not sure where, but I would choose to visit with nursing home patients who are not visited by their families and to pray the rosary with them, should they choose, and with those who cannot (seemingly) pray on their own.

I meant FOR the truth and AGAINST evil. As far as irritating people, let’s follow Jesus’ example. He sure irritated people when He was around. He had nothing against wealth, except when it interferred with one’s relationship with God.

Now God has made us all missionaries in a distant place (not our hopeful homes in heaven) known as Earth. He gave us a soul and free will to choose what we would do. He has told us (i.e. our mission) to love Him with our whole heart, mind, and soul and love our neighbor as ourself.

How have you loved your neighbor?

I try in all I do, say and think to love my neighbour (my neighbour is every person on this planet I come into contact with in one shape or form or another and those I will never come into contact with but can love by my prayers etc), to sacrfice the ‘self’ , I realise now I am despite my best efforts, only giving human love, which is not the same as divine love, this human love is inadequate in the sight of what is divine love, but in it’s weakness is great strength and though I may always not give as much as I should and therefore fail in the sight of God, I hope and pray to strive to love and love and love until it hurts me. All I can do is let God work His grace in my heart, spirit, soul, mind and body and in handing my life entire to Him may I then be fit to LOVe others at my very best. It is His grace that gives me the capacity to truly LOVE and without His grace I am nothing.

Actually, there is a slight possible that I may end up in Salt Lake City. Talk about a “distant place!” All kinds of Mormons all over the place.
