If I commit a sin in my dream is it a sin?

I had a wierd dream today:

I dreamt that I had a big quarrel with my sister. She was in her classroom and I don’t know why I happened to be in that classroom. Things got heated up and I slapped her in front of all her friends. As soon as I did that in a fit of rage, I realized that I had sinned and felt guilty (in my dream 😃 ). The dream didn’t end there (some peple went to call the principal 😃 and then I had to flee 😃 … ) but I think that’s sufficient information for you.

So, what do you think? Is it something that I have to confess during my confession? I personally don’t think so, but still want to know what you think.

The dream did make me realize some things about myself - a zero tolerance tendency, a hot temper, etc. :D, but despite the quarrels, I do love my sister. :hug3:

No, you don’t have to go to confession over this. You could probably have dreamed worser things and still be ok. Assuming you didn’t have control of the dream, you’re fine.

Some people, like myself, can actually exert some amount of control over our dreams some of the time. I know that I’ve had some dreams like that where it was like a watching a movie that I could edit. I could rewind at will, fast forward at will, stop at will, add content or remove it at will, and even force myself to wake up.

You’re ok, but now I’m actually wondering about myself. I’ve had some dreams on occasion that I didn’t create myself, but was able to control and stop, but didn’t. I’d say more, but I don’t want to hijack your thread.

To answer your question though, NO.
 
In dreams, even lucid ones, you don’t have full control of your sense of reason. You can’t sin in a dream or half asleep state, at least not mortally as far as I know.
 
I read once that if you live a celibate life then you are more likely to have sexual dreams. This even makes them a good sign of your chastity, so I read.

As others have said, we are not responsible for our dreams because we are not in control of ourselves in the sleeping state. Our dreams may reveal hidden desires but it is how we deal with those desires in the real world which matters. 🙂
 
I also dream of commiting sins in my dreams. But I think that these dreams compensate the sins I hold back and don’t do in reality. It’s a release from reality.

I am truly happy that I only commit those sins in my dreams because I have no control of what I do in my dreams…otherwise I would end up in confession every week.

They say that some dreams are teaching us something about ourselves.
Last night I dream’t I saw the face of Jesus in a wedding photo of a beautiful Armenian Lady. I screamed with joy when I saw his face on the photo. I told her I was happy for her that Jesus chose to show up in her wedding photo of just herself.
That was a nice dream.
 
Lets take a look at the definition of a mortal sin:
  1. Has to be of serious matter
  2. You have to know it is a serious matter
  3. You give “full consent of the will”
In dreams, you are not in control of your thoughts. So #2 and #3 go out the window straight away.

Therefore, it is not mortal, nor a sin at all.
 
I think it’s as Milton suggests in ~Paradise Lost~ when Eve dreams that she sins against God but wakes up with tears in her eyes. Adam counsels her and tells her that as long as she did not approve of her actions in the dream (she was sorry, felt terrible about it, wondered if she had sinned) then there was no sin involved.
And, as everyone else on this thread has pointed out, you really have little to no control over what you dream, ergo I would agree and say that you didn’t sin and don’t have to go to Confession for this.
 
No… I’ve had dreams where I do things like that then in the dream I begin to wonder “Am I in mortal sin now?” Then when I awake it takes a few minutes for me to even realize I did that in a dream.
 
Ah, I’ve had that dilemma before but because your not in full control of things then its not a mortal sin.
