Hello. I am considering going through the RCIA process to convert to Catholicism. My question is on the validity of my marriage. This is the situation: my wife and I were both raised and confirmed in the Lutheran church although neither of us have been a practicing Christian for many years. We were both married (in civil ceremonies) once previously. My first wife was a lapsed Catholic who had one previous marriage in the Catholic church followed by a civil divorce and no annulment. My wife’s first husband had also been married once previously (not in the Catholic church) and then divorced, also with no annulment.
Would it be the case that both of our previous marriages would be considered invalid, since in each case the previous spouse also had a previous marriage that had not been annulled? And therefore our present marriage would be considered valid? Or is this a question that really cannot be answered until it is reviewed by the appropriate authority? Thanks for your help!
