If Jesus canonized someone before death, why can't the Church?

Jesus canonized the thief of the cross before he died.

Through the Churches apostolic authority, why can’t we since we surely do work in *Persona Christi. *

Thanks!

Good question, but the Church does not make revelation, they protect it and that is why they go through the necessary steps for canonization IMHO.

The Church does this all the time. Anytime someone is Baptized or receives Unction or absolution shortly before death, he will (very likely) go to heaven. And maybe not even very shortly, depending on whether you think it is easy or difficult to commit mortal sin (I personally believe that it is difficult for a person of good will, and the vast majority of such people are in a State of Grace).

Anytime a Baptized child (before age of reason) dies, we have another saint.

Everyone in heaven was made a saint (through the ministry of the Church) while still living.

Well they are kinda different things. Jesus assured a man his salvation, he granted him final penitence and this was made known to the thief and to us through Scripture. Canonization is a declaration of one’s salvation based on evidence of miracles and sanctity, it is a different sort of thing. imho

miracles and sanctity
Yes, I believe these criteria are what differentiate saints from the “normal citizens” of heaven.

All saints are in heaven, but not all who are in heaven are saints.

No he didnt. He absolved him, but did not canonize him.
The Church absolves the dying all the time.

What do you mean canonize? Canonization only recognizes what God has revealed. Jesus, being THE judge, assured the thief that he will be in paradise with Him. No Apostle or Apostolic Successor has that privilege and authority. Only Jesus is judge.

I was taught in Parochial School, over 65 years ago that the good thief’s name was Dismas and he was a saint. If you look in many “Lives of the Saints” books you will find his name.
