My sister isnt Catholic and this is one argument I don’t have an answer for she said that if Mary was without sin then why didn’t she die on the cross instead of Jesus she also believes it to be a sin to pray to Mary because god is a jealous god and she believes Mary doesn’t want us to pray to her She also said the early church Christians did not pray to Mary in such a way I don’t have an answer for any of these please help

Mary most certainly would have taken His place. What a mother will do for her child…the truth is, Mary is His mother and because of this she cannot take His place. Jesus needs to be the son and Mary needs to be His mother. Children need parents. Parents do not need children. Parents want children.

Mary is not God. She is not some sort of 4th person of God.

Jesus Christ is God. He is the Second Person of the Triune God.

Martyrdom of Mary would have been an act of great love, but, it could not save mankind.

Sit down with a dictionary and look up the word “pray”. To many non-Catholics, “Pray” means worship and veneration. They do not realize that “pray” also means simply to ask. We believe that Mary went to heaven. We ask her to intercede for us.

I am guessing if you asked your sister to pray for you, she would do it. Well, so would Mary.

Earliest known Marian prayer is on a papyrus fragment dated in the 200’s. It seems to be the basis of the sub tuum praesidium. Here is an webpage.

God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself. Jesus is different from Mary. Only the Son was in the beginning with God. Jesus and Mary have completely different abilities. She, being only human, could not raise herself from the dead, for example. How could she reconcile the human race with God? She was not God incarnate.

I would add that there is an ancient tradition that St. Dominic received the Rosary from Our Lady in an apparition at Prouille in 1206 A.D.

@Rosie11
In Genesis 3:15 I will put enmities between thee (satan) and the woman(Mary), and thy seed wicked sinners and those who dishonor Her against God’s Will and her seed:(Jesus, Catholic and those who honor and respect Her for what She is, the Mother of God ) she shall crush(what a humiliation for satan who is pride to be defeated and crushed by a women, God loves it ) thy(satan) head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel. Read and meditate? understand?

Did all sin? yes Romans 3:23 since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,John 9:31 We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if any one is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him./ Her, (Mother Mary obey does the will of God and Worship Him Luke 1:46-55 )God listens to Her.

So what does God do? He creates a new creation the New eve in Jeremiah 31:22 How long will you waver,O faithless daughter? (Eve and we her children) For the Lord has created a new thing on the earth:a woman(Mother Mary sinless ) protects a man.( Jesus)”

Blessed Mother, makes it very clear whom to obey? Jesus and He make it very clear whom to obey Mother Mary, did He not? He gave his last treasure(all the Graces, secrets of the Kingdom of God is Hidden in the Immaculate Heart of Mary. LK 2:19,51) to the Church as St John as a Apostle and representing all of us, read and understand ? follow His instructions?

John 19:26 When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, “Woman,(addressing as the Women of Genesis 3:15 the New Eve our Mother Mary) behold, your son!” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!”( its a commandment Exodus 20:12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long(Eternity ) in the land (Heaven)which the Lord your God gives you). And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home(His heart, the Church, for all human race for Eternity).Hebrews 11:16 (Mother Mary metaphorically emphasized here Revelation 21:2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem (Mother Mary)
1 Corinthians 6:17 But he who is united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. so did Mother Mary suffered spiritually martyrdom like many saints who had stigmata even more than all the humans because she was united with Jesus on the cross.

Heavenly Father has done great things for Her, He has brought down rulers from their thrones and lifted up the lowly(Mother Mary ) He did the will of the Father and fulfilled His promise ,His mission, role, did He not? Jesus said it is Finished only then, He fulfilled and finished His most important mission of His life, the will the Father, by entrusting Mother Mary to the Church. Women behold your Son . “Behold, your mother!” Its a commandment ,lets Obey and finish our mission by doing the will of God.God Bless

Mary was preserved from sin in anticipation of the saving merits of her Son’s Pascal Mystery. She did not die for humankind on the Cross because as a daughter of Adam and Eve she, too, was in need of the saving Death and Resurrection of Our Lord.

The Virgin Mary, who at the message of the angel received the Word of God in her heart and in her body and gave Life to the world, is acknowledged and honored as being truly the Mother of God and Mother of the Redeemer. Redeemed by reason of the merits of her Son and united to Him by a close and indissoluble tie, she is endowed with the high office and dignity of being the Mother of the Son of God, by which account she is also the beloved daughter of the Father and the temple of the Holy Spirit. Because of this gift of sublime grace she far surpasses all creatures, both in heaven and on earth. At the same time, however, because she belongs to the offspring of Adam she is one with all those who are to be saved. She is “the mother of the members of Christ . . . having cooperated by charity that faithful might be born in the Church, who are members of that Head.”(3*) Wherefore she is hailed as a pre-eminent and singular member of the Church, and as its type and excellent exemplar in faith and charity. The Catholic Church, taught by the Holy Spirit, honors her with filial affection and piety as a most beloved mother.

???

Because she isn’t God.
And as a daughter of Adam and Eve she was preserved from sin only because the Lord’s Passion was anticipated through her.

Even though her cooperation was deemed essential by God in the economy of salvation, the Blessed Virgin Mary is among the saved:
“.…the Blessed Virgin is invoked by the Church under the titles of Advocate, Auxiliatrix, Adjutrix, and Mediatrix. This, however, is to be so understood that it neither takes away from nor adds anything to the dignity and efficaciousness of Christ the one Mediator.” (Lumen Gentium, 62)

Mary is not God. It was not her vocation to die for the forgiveness of our sins. That task belonged solely to her son who is God himself in human form.
she also believes it to be a sin to pray to Mary because god is a jealous god
God is a jealous god. There should be no other gods before him as commanded. Mary is not a god. She is a human being who, through God’s grace, bore the Son of God.

Mary is not ever worshiped. She is held in high esteem. She is honored not just because we think she is awesome. She is honored because God chose her. Even the angels were in awe of her (Hail, Full of Grace. The words of the Angel Gabriel according to scripture).
she believes Mary doesn’t want us to pray to her
We are entrusted to her care (John 19:26-27). There is nothing wrong with asking her to pray for us. Again, Mary is not God. She is not worshiped.

Additionally, everything that we ask Mary to help us with is only accomplished by God. God alone has the power to answer our prayers. (To see how the relationship between a King (Jesus) and his Mother (Mary) operated see 1 King 2:20. In Jewish custom, the Mother is made Queen not the King’s Wife.)
She also said the early church Christians did not pray to Mary in such a way
The Hail Mary prayer is scriptural:

Hail, Full of Grace! The Lord is with you. Luke 1:28.

Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Luke 1:42.

These two scriptures have been prayed since the early church. And again, Mary is not the reason why these scripture are important. “Hail, Full of Grace! The Lord is with you.” is important because it recognizes that Christ is in the womb. “Hail, Full of Grace! The Lord is with you.” is important because it, once again, recognizes that Christ is there with Mary. These scriptures are Christ-centered. So too is our devotion to Mary. It is Christ-centered.

This is as I understand it.

Her sacrifice wouldn’t have merited us because she lacks the divine nature that Jesus has.

God is infinite so only He could repay against the infinite offense that sin causes.

As previous posters noted, Mary, being human, was subject to original sin also. If Jesus, God incarnate, had not redeemed mankind thru His passion and death, Mary would have been conceived and born with original sin.

Jesus is the only mediator between us and the Father, meaning that He sacrificed Himself to the Father. Mary intercedes for us with Jesus. Thus Jesus will do things for Mary when she asks on our behalf, that He wouldn’t necessarily do if only we asked. Scripture gives us an example of this:

On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

_ “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”_

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

_ Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”_

They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
