If Something Is An Occasion To Sin, Avoid It Altogether?

I was thinking about this earlier, if you are watching a movie or a tv show and you are watching it because it’s a good show all around but there is like 10-20 seconds of someone in a bathing suit or scantily clad, and this might make you commit the sin of lust, should you avoid the tv show or movie all together or just turn away or do something else for those 10-20 seconds?

I was also watching a commercial yesterday and it could be an occasion to sin, so since it is, does that mean I would have to avoid tv altogether since I wouldn’t know when it would be on, or when it comes on just turn away?

It really depends on the person. And it matters if you are confusing lust with physical attraction.

If, while watching a show, you see a girl in a bathing suit and get that immediate reaction that involves heart rate, blood pressure…etc, that is normal(physical attraction).

But, if you **choose **to take it a step farther by thinking about that girl and fantasizing, then you would be falling into lust.

So only you know yourself. If seeing an image on tv is going to lead you to actually sin, then I would avoid the tv altogether.

But, if you are having a normal male reaction to what you see on tv, then I would try do something like praying for her and yourself at that time.

Hope that helps…

“If your eye should cause you to sin, pluck it out.”

NOT good advice for someone who may struggle with scrupulosity:tsktsk:

I find it helps me if I’m watching a decent program and an inappropriate commercial comes on, to say a prayer (while turning away from the TV), and to pray for those who were involved in any way with making the objectional program: “God have mercy on them. Open their eyes to see You and to see the truth of Your goodness and beauty.”
