If the Pope endorsed a candidate how would that affect your voting decision? I am asking because a poll was done about this topic on a Facebook group related to UK politics discussion and I thought it would be interesting to see how a Catholic population would respond.
  • would be more likely to vote for the endorsed candidate
  • it would not matter
  • would be inclined to vote the opposite

I would continue to vote my conscience while praying very intensely that God either send us a new Pope or knock some sense into the one that is sitting.

I am copying a poll that was in a UK political opinion page. Some people were curious so I thought real Catholics should answer what they’d do.

If the pope endorsed a candidate that I would have voted for anyway, I would be pleased. But if he endorsed a different candidate, I would not change my vote.

There’s no point in a strongly worded letter when the Pope doesn’t need or care about my vote for him or my campaign contribution to his coffers.

If the pope endorsed a candidate where ? In which country ?

I think that is it illegal for a church or non-profit organization in the USA to suggest or publicize any political affiliation.

He didn’t endorse King James 1st, so I won’t be voting for him.

That’s not even the same as not endorsing. The pope could want a candidate that he has excommunicated. They’re completely different matters

Endorsements, from any source, rarely have influence on my vote.
I tend to formulate my own opinion based upon the candidates position on those issues I deem most important.

I’d be more likely to vote for him, but if he goes against good morals or something then I won’t vote for him. (note: him/her, but it’s annoying to put /her after everything).

In other words I would consider it inasmuch that it is supportive to the faith and good reason.

I would be wondering why the Pope was getting involved in the political affairs of one country instead of focusing on the universal Church.

the church has never endorsed a candidate and never should
that’s why if indeed it happens i would take notice and therefore more likely to endorse such a candidate. precisely because it doesn’t happen very often and therefore it must be something important that the Pope considers to take this extraordinary measure.
However if this happens frequently then I would obviously follow my conscience.

Abraham Lincoln, when asked if God was on our side, is said to have replied: “‘I am not at all concerned about that, for I know that the Lord is always on the side of the right. But it is my constant anxiety and prayer that I and this nation should be on the Lord’s side.’” [from ‘Six Months in the White House with Abraham Lincoln’ by Francis B. Carpenter]

That is the correct perspective. The question is not ‘Is God on our side?’, it is ‘Are we on God’s side?’

My vote - nuance - means I will give what Pope Francis says more than one thought before voting.

I voted “it would not matter” because this question is absurd.

The Pope wouldn’t choose a candidate for POTUS.

We learned our lesson in the middle ages trying to meddle in temporal affairs.

While many Catholics may be interested in the Pope’s opinion, when it comes to political candidates, I will vote as I always have by researching each candidate, finding out where they stand on the issues esp those which affect me and then when I vote, I will vote my conscience knowing that God is with me as I cast my vote.
