St. John says: “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” (1 John 1:8)

this referes to someone before the sacrament of reconciliation is this correct? surely you can acknowledge you have sinned in the past but if your sins have bene forgien you canno say you have sin…

or is this a statemnet to always acknolwedge that we have sinnned?

Right - and just because we have our sins forgiven in the sacrament of reconciliation, it doesn’t mean we haven’t sinned. It simply means that our sins have been forgiven.

So we are all still sinners, but through the mercy of God, we are no longer slaves to sin. We are free to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven as adopted children.

We are saved by grace through faith. We are not saved by faith alone. Our faith needs to be a living faith, which results in good fruit/works. It is by this that we are able to receive/accept God’s grace which will save us. In the Catholic world, one is not truly saved until one reaches Heaven. I mentioned in another topic about how when one is stranded at sea, he is not saved until he has his feet on land. Sailors on a ship may find him and bring him aboard which will make traversing a rough sea easier, but he still isn’t saved because the seas are still rough. It is only when he reaches land that he is saved. Similarly, just becoming a Christian or specifically a Catholic, doesn’t mean you are saved. It is not until you are on the shores of the Kingdom of Heaven that you are saved.

So, to be saved, make it to Heaven. How do we do that? Follow Christs commandments by following His Church. Repent of your sins, help others in charity, and spread the Gospel.

In the context of Acts 16:31 the salvation is being offered to the jailer and his household through baptism. As many Christian religions believe it is through Baptism and belief in Jesus Christ, Our Lord that saves our soul. This is commonly referred to as confirmation and is the way one would be saved as a Catholic.

Ephesians 2:8

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God—

James 4:6

But he gives all the more grace; therefore it says,

How can an extremely shy person “spread the Gospel”? I do what I can to repent of my sins and repent of my sins and repent of my sins ( ad nauseum) help others in charity, although I’ve heard that some charitable groups are really scams,

There are many ways to evangelize. There are the more outspoken ways, and there are the more subtle ways. A shy person is more likely to do better in the subtle ways. But a big part of it has to do with the fruit/works you bare/do. If you treat people with kindness, and share the same kind of love that the Lord has to offer, people will know you for your kindness, and some will eventually ask, “Why are you this way?” And you reply, “Because I am Christian; because I’m Catholic.” You may not need to do more than that. Sometimes that is enough to plant a seed that will grow their curiosity and search for the Truth of the Lord.

I have heard more than my share of the outspoken type of evangelizers, especially when I was a protestant, and I’ve always felt ashamed that I couldn’t be outspoken in defending the faith specially since becoming Catholic:blush:

Here’s the “Rest of the Lesson”

**1John.1 Verses 8 to 10 **“If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”

1John.5 Verses 16 to 17 "If any one sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin, he will ask, and God will give him life for those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin which is mortal; I do not say that one is to pray for that. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not mortal.

AND GOD’S SOLUTION TO SIN

John.20 Verses 20 to 23" When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. One can try their way and attack God’s Soverignity OR do it HIS WAY! Amen.
